Best home defense shotgun ?

For home defense time typically is not on your side. Generally, the quicker you can grab and load the shotgun the better your chances of a positive outcome. With that in mind a box magazine fed shotgun seems the logical choice especially if retrieving and loading in reduced lighting type conditions while still adhering to storage laws.

I feel like this logic is flawed... leaving a box mag loaded (remember, speed is key) will distort the sheels and cause lots of stoppages and feed issues. If you wait until there is an intruder to load the mag, you've lost all advantages of the box mag and are not any faster then any other tube fed shotgun. I'll stick to my M4 Double tapping 00buck FTW

Have to agree, I have the 14" Mossberg, but my sinsinatti mag fed is so much quicker to load and has been very reliable so far, some of the original offerings from turkey have sullied the rep of them similar to the new batches of Remington compared to the old 870's. Either way, I think practice loading and shooting whether mag or tube fed will help if/when The real deal happens!

I still own a Winchester Defender I bought back in 1984 at a Canadian Tire, the days when you could fill out your FAC application right there and then and be out the door with your new purchase.

Can't complain on the build quality of my Defender.

My only shotgun is for exactly that purpose.
It's a rebuilt Winchester model 12 in 12ga
I cut the barrel back and refinished it to 20" then tapped and threaded a new bead. Its light, simple, easy to load and the epitome of reliability.
For $200 shipped to my door off the EE and $80 in parts!

Also all of the magazine fed shotguns I have come across are prone to failure such as to load due to magazine issues vs pump or SxS

This thread is funny. You guys are talking like you would actually shoot someone if they broke in. You would be better to hit buddy over the head with all the guns that have been suggested than shoot him. Canada, remember..... Your going to jail.

My preference is a 9 iron. nice and short for in close and its only restricted on the greens

assuming that my guns are safely stores as per reg, id need to

1) find my keys
2) get my butt downstairs to the basement where the safe is (passing the front door on the way)
3) unlock the safe in the dark (cuz i wouldn't want the bad guy to know where i am)
4) go through 25 trigger lock keys to find the right one (still in the dark)
5) unlock the trigger
6) unlock my ammo (yep, still in the dark)
7) find the right ammo
8) load the firearm (i might turn the lights on now)

They bad guy has taken my stuff and pawned my wife's wedding ring by now....

Best gun in the world means #### if you don't know how to use it or practice with it... lots.

Shotgun is the most difficult gun to master effectively for home defense. Mastered, it is one of the most effective.

"I don't need a 1000 dollar gun, I need to know how to run the gun I got."

Excellent message.

$200 shotgun and $800 worth of ammo for training is a far better buy than $800 gun and $200 worth of ammo.

Canuck Defender/Regulator combat is perfectly acceptable for home defense.

Why is your gun safe in the basement, and not in the bedroom closet? Why on earth would you trigger lock any gun in a safe? Why is your ammunition under lock and key (unless it's on a shelf above the gun it fits)? Why turn the lights on when your shotgun has a light attached, and your bedside table should have a flashlight on it - right beside the bear spray? What is it they say about prior planning?

You do you. Of the last dozen or so people who have been charged in the last few years across Canada for using firearms and lethal force in legitimate self defense, all of them have been acquitted or had the charges dropped.

Most break and enters are petty thieves who turn tail the minute they learn someone is home. If someone is in your house and not deterred by your presence you should be preparing for a fight for your life. There is no point being legally right and your legally dead.

Not likely based on recent history...And also, infinitely better than going to the cemetery.

H&R single 10Ga oo buck only need one shot.

Not sure what your guys homes are made of, or what your floor plan lay out looks like but 00 buck will through more than 8 layers of drywall and barely slows down going through studs.

Watch this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C29mEJFFIvo

4th rule of gun safety is know whats beyond your target. Last thing I want to have to be thinking about is where my kids are on the other side of wall when I am lining up a shot on a bad guy. You aren't hunting for meat. You are trying to destroy a threat.

I was a big believer in 00 buck until I watched this and several other videos showing various shot gun penetrations. Note that the gun used in testing had a much longer barrel than a typical short barreled gun that we all prefer. Nice thing about the shorter barrel is slightly reduced energy and penetration and more awe inspiring muzzle flash.
