Zombie Survival Postal Match

I shot the match on Friday, I tried it with a Savage 12FVSS with a 6-24x scope, and an AR-15 with an EOTech. Now I have to find my camera, until then, here are some things I noticed:

A magnified optic gives a huge advantage, in that you can verify hits. I had to shoot at each zombie 3 or 4 times with my AR just to get a good chance of a headshot because I couldn't see the bulletholes at 25 yards. If these were real zombies, they would fall down after a headshot, so you wouldn't need magnification to verify hits. I'm not sure how we can get around this in a match. Reactive headshot targets? Maybe those "splatter" targets that show colored bullet holes?

High magnification and a match trigger make a huge difference. It was way easier with the Savage varmint/BR gun than the AR, even though it's bolt action. It would be pretty easy to get a perfect score with this gun and the right kind of practice, but if this was the real Z-day, I probably wouldn't be lugging around my 15 pound varmint gun.

How much of the head is a kill zone? Where does the head end and the body begin? You need to destroy the brain of a zombie, so a hit in the jaw or neck may not be "fatal." Is this taking things way too far? :D

P.S. I don't know if multiple entries are allowed. I shot with the Savage first, but this is posted in the black rifle forum. If you only want to accept one entry, that's fine with me.

I hot glued paintballs in the middle of the heads. For the "bigger" zombies I used three.

Worked damn sweet for headshot verification.

I had the same problem. Magnified optics definitely will have the advantage.

overthetop: Go ahead and shoot and send me the results! The more the merrier!

damndirtyape, those are excellent observations. I know that a scope and a rest makes a HUGE difference, but that's OK so far because this is more for fun rather than direct competition. I am including the gun and optic (if any) used on the scores though, so we can compare similar rigs.

As for submitting multiple targets, pick one for your "official" one, but I'd be happy to score any others too (only one will be official, though.) I'd suggest the AR since - as you say - this is the Black Rifle forum, after all.

Also, you're absolutely right that in a real Z-situation you'd have positive ID of hits, so the inability to spot your own hits without an optic is a drawback.

In fact, to help address this - just today I redid the scenarios by lightening up the silhouettes. They are now a light grey (not black). Much easier to spot hits.

I love the idea of paintballs glued on. Another idea I had but have not yet tried is to take one of those adhesive shoot-n-see targets and cut out head-sized (or brain-sized) pieces. But for now the lighter targets should do.

Regarding size of kill-zone: For these scenarios, ANYWHERE on the head counts (even if it were not technically a brain or spinal column hit). Of course, the call is mine to make as I am scoring them.

Here is an example (using my own target) of a just-hit and a close-miss.

See the first post for updates.

Added download link for scenario 2. You have until the end of August for this one.
If anyone's joining us late, feel free to shoot scenario 1 and 2 and send them both in to me.

This one is pistol only. Any questions? Post here!

sinewave,

I emailed my targets in a couple weeks ago...my score would have been -160 or so. Just wondering if you got my email or not.

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Maybe you can add a spotter help in the rules. The spotter call "hit" when a head shot is made. This will simulate zombie that goes down. He only say hit when it's on the head, nothing else...

Yup, I was away gents. Thanks for your patience. I'll post any pending scores presently.

Jeff/1911 - Actually I never did get your email! Can you re-send it? Perhaps my spam filter caught it. I try to be careful but it may have slipped through the cracks.

As for the spotting, a pal to help spot works pretty good but I updated the targets a little a couple weeks ago and made them much lighter so hits are easier to spot.

I'm posting the 3rd (and final) round a little early so people can shoot it this weekend if they like. See the first post.

Anyone who hasn't shot rounds 1 or 2, feel free to shoot all 3 and send them in. (The links are also in the first post).
