lubing gaz check bullet when you don't put them on and not applying lube to the shank

Took me a couple of tries to figure out what you meant in the title. I see what you are up to. Good idea. :)

I can see what you're talking about but I have sized and lubed lots of gas check bullets that don't have gas checks. I just used a hard lube in a heated Lyman luber/sizer. When the lube hardens it sticks to the bullet pretty good. Might smoke a little more but nothing of note. Your idea might be useful if using soft lube that can get pretty messy.

I did that for a while but when doing plinking loads on a progressive and you seat the bullet in a case that was flared with a M die it scrape some lube sometime even if its hard so this way its clean and you save the time cleaning the smeared cases......but if you do precision cases I see your point.....

I have only done it with handgun bullets (44 magnum) and I put a decent flare on the case mouth (more than an M die would). I also use a Hornady seater die with the floating seater sleeve that aligns the bullets with the case mouth and keeps it from shaving lube from the base. I can't recall ever having to clean lube off a case. However, a standard seater and lack of attention when placing the bullet on the case mouth could definitely lead to a crooked seated bullet and some lube being smeared on the case.

Yep, a whole 1/2 cent per round at today's prices.
Not sure how well you do math but the Hornady gas checks I use currently run around $68/1000 without shipping (6.8 cents each +). I'm sure rich guys like you don't mind p!ssing away 7 cents a round on something that does absolutely nothing to improve accuracy or performance so knock yourself out. I'll spend the money on something more useful.

My apologies. I made a mistake. My math is bad. My apologies. :runaway: So sorry. I recently bought three boxes of 1000 ea. of Hornady 8mm checks for $50 each. I made a mistake. My apologies. Good thing you put me in my place.

Well as long as you're sorry and have admitted you were wrong all is good. Laugh2

for plinking usually velocity hs below 1500 fps and you don't need GC and you can put the money on more powder and shoot more

How much money do you save by not applying lube to the shank? (Just teasing.) I also shoot Gc bullets without a Gc ...but I lube the shanks. In fact, I shoot my plinkers as cast ( not sized).

Dragon lube sells .458 gas check $ 67.00 put shipping taxes and it come around $85
now each time I go and shoot I do on the bench shooting and plinking
easily I shoot 100 to 200 round a day
so in my summer I usually shoot up to 2000 round so that would be 170 dollars
now that is almost 3 pound of powder and in my 4570 at 15 gr. of powder a shot that is a lot
to be more precise that is 933 shot free......
if you shoot jus a little a year may be no fuss.....
what do you think

I get the math about saving money by not using a gas check... I do the same thing for the same reason. My little tease was simply about applying lube to the top groove but not the part where the gas check goes.

I presume you shoot at Ruisseau Noire?
