I was bitten by the German 45 bug

I recently had a chance to shoot a 1911 and I was bitten by the 45 bug. The German 45 bug to be more precise.

While the 1911 is the most common 45 platform out there, my preference lies somewhere between the Walther PPQ 45, the Sig Sauer P227, and the Heckler & Koch HK45.

I really would prefer to hold each one separately and ideally get a chance to shoot them before making my purchase, but these are rather hard to come by and to my knowledge, there are no stores around Ottawa that carry any one of them, nor have I seen any member shoot any of them at my range.

Leaving aside the totally subjective matter of hand fit, does anyone have first hand experience with either one of these pistols, and what are your thoughts on them?

Primary purpose will be to have fun punching paper at the range (no IPSC, IDPA or other form of sanctioned competition).

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Hk45 has the most adjustability for ergonomics. The ppq 9mm has a great trigger. Odds are so does the 45 but i have no experience with it. The sig... heaviest and oldest but has its own charm. Especially with the srt trigger. The hk45 imo is best enjoyed with the lem trigger. Simce you want to just play with one on the range. Pick the one that draws you the most. Our opinions on it isn't that relevant.

Not a semi but throw a S&W 625, or a 25 in the mix. You’ll be surprised:)

I tried revolvers, and while I am more accurate with them than with pistols, I still prefer pistols.

^^^^Exactly!

All 3 have their pros and cons. And all 3 are fairly uncommon. They are all fine reliable and accurate guns. Curious why the P227 over the P220?

Mainly because of the 10-round capacity of the P227 vs the 8-round P220.

I am intrigued by the HK45's LEM trigger. I hear it's a very light DA (except on first shot). There is actually one for sale on EE right now.

Fair enough, try a HK Mark 23. Very accurate and fun. BTW they make 10 rounds for the P220. I have a couple:)

I have a P227R 45 ACP and a P226 Combat ( both are unfired) they are both the same size, if you close your eyes and handle them you can feel wich is wich.

P227 hold 10 rounds the 220 8 rounds and is bigger.

Thanks for the clarification JP. The 220 is still skinnier due to the single stack mag, isn’t it? And you can get 10rd mags for it. Although they do stick out.

I felt the same way until I shot my Buddy's S&W 625 PC (45ACP). I now own it and sold off all my 45ACP Pistols.

Out of your choices you can't go wrong with the HK45/LEM trigger.

I just saw the ad on the EE. Looks like a solid deal. Comes with 4 mags(~$100/each) usually only comes with 2.
I'm not connected in the Seller in any way......

Awaiting my brand new H&K Mark 23, it will join my P227R and my Glock 21, a CZ 97B brand new could join them. I just luv 45 ACP, pretty much covered on the german side.:dancingbanana:

The HK USPs are also nice. If you are prepared to go higher, the USP Tactical/Expert/Elite are hard to beat. Higher still is the Mark 23.

For Sig, i’d go the 220 route as well, mainly because there are 220 variants that I like (German classics, full stainless, 5” and 6” target models, SAO legion). Nothing jumps out with the 227, but that is pure personal preference.

...and I've been following your thread, "Mother of all 45ACP" thinking you already got yours! lol

The hk45 is a great pistol, if you buy one, make sure it's the lem variant. The da sa trigger is horrible. I still have my hk45ct that I use from time to time.

Only if your 226 wear factory plastic grips. If you change them out all bets are off.
