11.6” barrel vs. 16” barrel - Colt Canada MRR

Hey guys,

I’ve google as much as I can, and other than a little bit of velocity loss, I’m finding it difficult to see why I shouldn’t buy the 11.6” barrel on the Colt Canada MRR.

Is there something I’m missing? I’ll be using the rifle at the range, max 300 yards, but 90% of the time within 100 yards.

Would it be a big mistake to get the shorter 11.6” barrel over the 16”? For my useage?

Thanks!

For what you stated 11.6 would be more ideal. P.s. federal independence xm193 chronos around 3000fps out of a bcm 11.5 barrel so you will have no trouble touching 300m with the right round.

Thanks very much guys. The truth is, aesthetically speaking I just like the look of the shorter rifle. I was hoping I wouldn’t be sacrificing a large degree of performance as a result of the shorter barrel. Which it sounds like I wouldn’t be :)

Thanks again, and Merry Christmas!

For years I only shot my CAR15 at 50 yards.

This summer I shot it out to 200 yards, all I can say is these things are accurate. Granted my gun is super old school had it for 25 years now, but I ended up taking the scope off and just using the irons hitting the gong happened way more than with my SKS.

Two weeks ago we were shooting indoors at 25 yards, and yeah I was leaning against the barrier, but check out this fluke group, my buddies just grinned and wanted to try out this compact lightweight old girl. :)

Barrel length is not a limiting factor in accuracy I have found, my old 1 in 7 twist seems to like 55 grain old yellow box Chinese ammo the best. Seriously I am not bullsh__ing you on the group, doubt I could do it again, but like I said this old girl keeps up to the 14.5" and 20" barrel ARs just fine, this time I just really took my time and used the barrier for something to steady on.

Randy, I’m having a hard time getting past how beautiful that range is!! Great collection of rifles!!

Thanks for confirming my thoughts (hopes). I’m putting a deposit down on the 11.6” version on Boxing Day :)

11.6 for the win. You won't be disappointed.

Now that’s a beautiful thing!! Curious, what type of shooting do you do with? Or is it a mix? How do you find longer range shooting?

Tactical shooting; square range, CQB, shoot house, vehicle operations. I work with a company that train LEO and PMC's

I find its very comparable out to 300m to the 14.5, with the benefit of being easier to move with it.

Thanks, best fun range ever!

You will love how nimble a shorty AR is.

Thanks for everyone’s help! Heading to the shop today to get the ball rolling. Now I have to figure out optics. I found a thread that offered up a handful of suggestions. Anyone here have some input. I love the idea of a red dot, with a magnifier. Planning a lot of 100 yard and less shooting... but we do go out as far as 300 yards, so need to be able to zoom in

If you plan on doing 3 gun, you will want the 16inch. This will allow for the longer handguard for stabilization during the match as you will be able to reach your hand further down the rifle.

Thanks, I’ll be using the rifle for recreational target practice only. :)

The only dot magnifier i have experience with is the dutch iur that had a comp m4 with an aimpoint twist off magnifier.

You can also try the elcan spectre dr 1/4x. It is a heavier optic though.

I have AR's in 7", 10" 16" and 20"

As said, for up to 300 yards, anything will do well.

Muzzle blast is a bit of an issue. I just installed a cheap cup type device that blows the noise and gasses forward.

As for a sight, one of the ARs has a red dot and I am surprised each time I shoot it. It is deadly up to about 50 yards. After that, the dot is rather big.

For a general purpose gun, a 1-5 or 2-7 scope (2-7 is very nice) is the most flexible.
