Just picked up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in 308 with a Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40 scope and weaver rail and rings. Just need the Harris bipod and will go out this weekend and sight it in and see what it can do.

I think that's the same one 999 got isn't it? Hogue stock? runs about $450 new?

$450? That's at least two hundred less than the cheapest price I've seen. Retailers seem to be selling these for around $650-799. It is still a bargain IMO.

Nice Gun

I like the looks of the Remington 700 SPS Tactical in 308 but I will stick to my Steyr SSG 69 P2 with an adjustable stock for length.

I did have an Armermant Technology 223 built on a Remington 700 action, but sold it to a guy in Halifax. Thr remington 700 action has to be the most sought after for building custom rifles and is the best value for the money. The Remington 700 SPS Tactical in 308 is a good gun for the value and should shoot well.

The Steyr would be nice... a little different price bracket (see huge). Depending how this shoots, we'll see how much of a deal...

I was kidding on the price. but even still the MSRP I've seen for it is a steal. I've seen people pay more for 700 actions only at auction.

Looks very slick. Lets us know how that scope works for you. I have one on my 10fp for 9 months now but have not been able sight it in. How's the fit/finish on that stock?

I would like to know how the 700 SPS Tactical shoots. I think it will be a good shooter, and if it isn't great it will be a great foundation for an upgrade.
It may only require a barrel and optics. Don't abandon the Remington for a brand name.
I only have a Steyr SSG because I was in the right place at the right time and had the money in my pocket, it's the same with my Kahles scope.
I hunt with a Remington 700 BDL with a stainless Mountain Rifle 7mm08 barrel and I really like it because it fits me.

What does the 20" barrel give up in velocity? Probably better off with the SPS Varmint with it's 26" barrel, if a 800m's + is in the program and especially if a stock upgrade is in the plans anyways.

Was out on Sunday past sighting in the Tactical. I have only shot smaller caliber (223 and under) and was quite surprised by the amount of kick that this thing has... I thought that the 308 was in the midrange for punch, but maybe the short barrel has something to do at least with the tendancy for the rifle to jump.

The rifle is quite accurate, and once zeroed at 100m, shot very cleanly, and accurately. First shot bullseyes were possible, and if the operator does a good job, can easily do 0.50 inch MOA... and I am quite happy with it and look formard to shooting this coming weekend.

The trigger pull has virtually no creep, and breaks cleanly like glass... but its no hair trigger, didn't measure, but must be at least 3 or 4 pounds pull.

To review, I am very happy with the Remington Tactical, and I personally think it is a very capable and accurate rifle...

Is there a problem with the short barrel and long distances 600m+? A gunsmith recommended I get the SPS Varmint 26" HB.

Call me crazy, but I think that I actually prefer the look of the SPS Tactical to the LTR. I realize that it doesn't have a bedding block, and the stock has a somewhat flexible forend, but it's stainless, cheap, and would make an excellent starting point for a do it all rifle (hunting, precision shooting) on a budget. I'm sure you could stiffen up the forend with some fiberglass on the inside, or maybe 'glass in a couple of metal rods or something so the stock doesn't touch the barrel when you use a bipod.

I've been trying to find one, but they seem to disappear as soon as they hit the shelves, or they want an $100. Cheapest I've seen is around $670, of course that doesn't do you much good if it ain't in stock.

Any way, nice lookin' rifle man. I've got a Merlin 2.5-10x that would go great on one of those, but I'm starting to lose hope that I'll find one for sale.

Thanks guys, so far I am very happy... I think for the money it is excellent value. I am really looking forward to taking it out again this weekend, and this time I'll try to remember my digital camera...
