Just picked up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in 308

What does the 20" barrel give up in velocity? Probably better off with the SPS Varmint with it's 26" barrel, if a 800m's + is in the program and especially if a stock upgrade is in the plans anyways.

My 308 155 grain in a 20 inch cronys at 2800 fps with a max load of varget. 26 inch should give about 3000 according to my load books.

If I'm not mistaken the twist rate is 1/9 on the Tactical and 1/12 on the Varmint. This is mostly an educated guess since 1/9 is what they use on their "police guns". Maybe someone who owns one can confirm?

Anybody know where to get an SPS Tactical right now in .308? The shop I want to buy from ordered theirs in Feb and have gotten squat so far.

It is 1:9 twist on the SPS Tactical... I haven't seen one for sale before or after purchasing mine. The dealer I got it from had it sitting there for a few months, so I'm pretty lucky.

Went out to the range again today, and so far the best hunting ammo for accuracy is the Federal made Fusion in 180 gr. I am still waiting for the match ammo I ordered to come in, as no one around here stocks it...

Beautiful rifle IchBinEinSniper, but I'm not sure why Remington puts these out with a 20" barrel? I wouldn't go anything less then a 22" barrel on a 308. You would loose velocity. Old school I guess, but I see no point in burning powder outside a barrel. The 24" or 26" turns my crank:D

With the 20 incher it doesn't get tangled in the bush... actually I think they have produced this length for "urban" ease of use, if you read some of the literature anyway. I have fired almost 200 rounds through it now, and it is very accurate, with the operator being the weakest link at this point. My biggest concern is the amount of flip or muzzle jump that this gun has... I was thinking of having a muzzle break installed, but it already sounds like a 300 Win Mag, and I doubt if the other guys in the firing line would appreciate it.

...20" .308 is far from "stiff", and far from truly loud. It's just a matter of conditioning, a lot of new shooters are surprised how much a .308 recoils. Soon enough, it feels like nothing. Try a .338, .375, or .458 Mag for reference, whole different world.

remington 700,sps in 308

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

im looking at one for $559.99, new here in town debating on getting one....

here in belleville carra outdoor sports web site has it advertised,,,

That's just the regular SPS hunting rifle not the SPS Tactical.

I too am curious to see how this rifle performs. Definitely could be a cheaper alternative than the LTR to build on.

I was at the Buffalo Gun Center (Ney York State) and they didn't have any in. Reference being that the States gets what they want first and we get whats left over. The Gun Center is quite a shop. And if they don't have any, they must be in short supply right now.

My thought anyway.................

It is 1:9 twist on the SPS Tactical.
Did it come with literature saying it was 1:9" or did you test yours? The SPS Tactical supposedly uses a shortened SPS Varmint barrel...which in .308 is 1:12". And the only place I can find that info online (other than a forum) is a Sniper Central test, and they also say it's 1:12". If you haven't tested yours, please do so we can finally be sure. :)
