Modern Sporter - Build Discussions

So many here have mentioned the JP Enterprises 6.5 grendel bolt. Is this for Creedmoor? This wouldn’t work for a .223 build, correct? I would simple purchase a .223 bolt carrier kit, right? Or can the 6.5 be used in a .223 build?

I’m sorry for these questions. This is all new to me

No the 6.5 bolt mentioned is for the 6.5 grendel. It has a case head diameter the same as the 7.62x39, 6mm ppc and 220 russian. The 6.5 creedmoor has a bigger case head the same size as a 308. And no the 6.5 grendel bolt will not work for 223 as the 223 has a smaller case head. Same size and 222 204 ruger 20 practical and others.

Thank you so much

There are also separate parts to the bolt carrier group. The bolt is the part that dictates what case head can be used. The carrier is the part that reciprocates and the carrier can have different bolts put into it as they are separate parts.

Best advice I can give you is spend time on Google. Read articles and if there is something in the article that you didnt know and isn't explained Google it. Then Google some more and more.

I have a brownells light weight. I’m happy with it so far. It’s nicely built.

If you can I’d try to find one in either Black Nitride, Nickel Boron, or Titanium Nitride. They have a nice slick coating that makes cleaning very easy!

We have the light weight nitride, and titanium nitride versions in store right now if anyone is still looking to get one. Only one of each however.

My new CMC trigger doesnt fit in my lower. Well I guess it fits, but it doesn't work. Time to start whittling....

Update:10 minutes of whittling the trigger base, everything works.

Anyone running a light weight BCG and non- adjustable gas block? Even better, a light weight BCG and a JP buffer system? My current plan is to run the Brownells light weight BCG, a MRA rifle length tube and gas block + JP buffer. Some folks say you need to go adjustable GB with a light weight BCG, I am not convinced.

I have an questions about barrels & bolts:

What manufacturers match barrel to bolt and head spacing etc?

Are there any manufacturers that make a completely black carbon wrapped barrel...i.e. steel portion of barrel is also black?

If one chooses to not go with a Carbon Wrapped Barrel and steel BCG is a Pencil Barrel and Titanium Bolt Carrier Group the next best choice for dollar to weight ratio?

Thanks in advance

Give ‘er man!

But seriously, you are going to spend a ton of money on a lightweight BCG and a JP buffer, then try and save $100 on a non adjustable gas block?

Just depends if you want a smooth cycling rifle or if you prefer the BCG slamimg to the rear...

Fulton Armoury matches barrels and bolts.

I’m running an H buffer and a non adjustable with a LW BCG and it shoots nice and soft. 3:30 ejection all day with several types of ammo. I’ve never used an adjustable gas block for any gun.

Then again, I don’t run suppressed, or things like 300 blackout.

I have 4 rifles with LW BCG’s, two 308win, 6.5 Grendel & .223. I wouldn’t even think about running a LW BCG in a rifle without an adjustable gas block. With hot Hornady superformance .308 ammo I’ve had casing rims ripped off with the gas fully open. Having it fully open was a mistake on my part. I also DO NOT recommend the use of any Hornady .308 ammo in a semi auto, it is usually loaded too hot and I’ve had quite a few popped primers.

You should do something to balance out the lower weight of the BCG. Your options are a heavier buffer, stronger spring or less gas. Less gas can be done several ways, adjustable gas block, smaller gas port in a custom barrel or weaker ammo. Due to the wide variation in possible parts combinations some guys will report no issues at all, but most likely would still benefit from a adjustable gas block. If only to save extra wear & tear on the rifle due to the faster bolt carrier movement.

Keep in mind lighter BCG’s originated from competition guys who want faster cycling to lower split times and the precived lower secondary recoil.

Running a heavy buffer kinda defeats the purpose of the light weight BCG doesn’t it?
