your lucky you don't have to prove how old you are to post on here. Now go tell your mommy somebody said a bad word to you cause the last 4 guys just called B.S. on you.

I have shot a whitetail through the heart with a 7mm mag and the deer ran for 1 mile.

Yep, I saw this once or twice in the world of make-believe. Any deer shot through the heart, even with a solid that does not expand, is good for maybe 150/175 yards, all conditions being considered. Many who read these posts have shot a lot of game, and KNOW what happens to a heart-shot animal, yours truly included. Now go get mommy to tuck you in for the evening. Eagleye.

Oh come on guys, let's not pick on the poor guy. He just did a little typo with the 7 mag thing, it was actually a .177 Mag Daisy Red Ryder.........:p

I shot a deer thru the heart one time, and it went 20 miles, all the way to the meat pole, in the back of my truck.:D

Seriously though, my dad shot a 200lb buck in the heart with a .308 180gr and it went 200 yds and dropped dead. We couldn't believe it went that far, 1 mile we'd be calling the Guiness Book.....

Still Mad

Is this guy honestly gonna show his face again?
I had the opportunity to think about this for awhile, and I considered that I may have been hard on the boy for a minute. Then I thought about the size of the deer on Van. Island. The does, even mature, hardly broke 110lbs, a good buck would be 150lbs on the hoof. Call me a liar if you like, I don't live there, but I've been there and seen the deer. Now these deer are hardly larger than an Alberta pronghorn. And maybe 2/3 the size of an Alberta mule deer (and that is generous), so we are talking about middling size deer. Now he recommended the 6.5x55 only out to 250 yds, and this was not due to the fact that the young man was planning to use it with military open sights, but due to the lack of the cartridges ability to kill past that range. He even suggested to me that I probably had lost deer irresponsibly by chosing to use such insufficient cartridges.
Now we move on to Scandinavia , were the hunting tradition is taken so seriously by the people that all of these countries actually have a test involving shooting moving targets. I would go out on a limb and even say that these people are more responsiblein their hunting sports than Canadians because there is extensive class time to gain the opportunity to apply for a hunting license.
The prey most hunted and sought after in Scandinavia is Moose. And would you like to guess which cartridge is most often used by hunters in Scandinavia......the 6.5x55. And when I talked to a Norse friend of mine that hunted yearly in his home land, he said that they had shot moose from 20m to 300m with their 6.5x55's (his wife hunts too), and that they routinely shot reindeer out to 400m with the same load (norma 140gr). Reindeer are the same size as large mule deer (300lbs) and moose 3 times the size. And when he didn't use his beloved 6.5x55, he enjoyed using his 7x64 Brenneke, but felt that the cartridge generated more recoil than needful and shows no significant advantage in killing power, or trajectory. And he never had to chase a moose for 1.6 kilometers after puncturing a heart. Maybe that would be because his hunting is based in reality and his experience is built on fact, not a pile of :bsFlag:.
My fellow CGNr, :mad:I recommend you put the rifle down, inhale and realize...................
that the smell is coming out of your mouth and not your diaper.
And again I reiterate, I have never lost a big game animal I have shot, no matter what cartridge I have been shooting. Enjoy your ignorance.

(ok......where's the moderator's spanking stick, cause I'm gonna get it:slap:)

God this getting funny, can you guys see that MARBA is pulling your chains?? I know MARBA .He is not a kid .He has killed just about ever spieces in north america, has shot more game than most people. He is proably laughing at you guys .When he was young he shot other guys targets in the military for he did not have to go to regimental shoots .So he could get the weekend off to go hunting.

Then he is a damn troll.
If he thinks that pretending to give bad advice is somehow going to give him extra hunting weekends he's retarded. Defend the pretender. Have a nice day. That crap isn't appreciated, and the islands a long way off to be brave like that, go ahead and kick the angry, chained bear, Bright Eyes. If I lived on an island with people like that, I'd vote NDP too, and join ProChoice. Pound sand, funny man. Welcome to gunnutz.:kickInTheNuts:

Interesting enough I have been talking to a friend I have in Sweden, and he said my M38 would work fine, but a 98 would be slightly better due to longer barrel/more velocity, and less muzzle flash.

He also recommended not scoping it. And to be honest I also can't bear the thought of drilling and tapping my safe queen. So for now, she is off the list, but I'll see on testing/sight in day.

so you dont have much if any hunting experience I take it, so you probably will get pretty wound up and excited when you actually get a chance at a legal deer. This rules out the idea of an ethical long shot with open sights, as shooting a deer at 300 yards under field conditions is alot different than popping a target at the range from a bench.

I think you're best bet is to try and get inside 150 yards and use the 30-30.

I'm feeling more comfortable about that idea more and more. Besides which I really love my 30-30, and I have replaced the crappy post 64 parts with pre 64 ones...such a handy rifle. :)

Anyway thanx for all the info, and advice guys.
I'll be sure to post pics of the trip later. :)

M44. The manliest rifle shooting the manliest cartridge. Built like a russion tractor. Plus it's short and handles very very well; and if you get stuck out after dark, the huge fireballs at the muzzle can light your way :D
