Form 6NIA

My form 6NIA expires in a few days so I sent in for new permit today... Here is the auto-reply received:

Thank you for your recent inquiry to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Firearms and Explosives Imports Branch (FEIB). It is the goal of FEIB to respond to requests from industry members and the general public within 90 days of receipt. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT DUE TO THE U.S. GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN, FORMS 6 AND 6NIA WILL NOT BE PROCESSED UNTIL THE GOVENRMENT REOPENS. THANK YOU.

(the exotic spelling is as rec'd)

Looks like we're in for quite a wait this year...

May the flees of 50M camels, the ticks of 50M deers and crabs of 100M low-lifes infest the crotch of all democrats. Nothing less.

Oh yeah, it's totally the democrats fault....

Longest shut down in history all because a grumpy old man can't get his way...

That’s definitely a pitb.
A US passport gets most guns across the border for me.
One of the advantages of being a dualie.
I can’t see the shutdown lasting for much longer.

The Border Patrol at the point of crossing have the right to validate your reason for crossing the border. When I have crossed at Border Crossings in Montana and North Dakota I automatically hand the nice border patrol officer my passport, Form 6NIA and the Match invitation as I have been asked for one previously on numerous occasions . I also have a club membership in Montana and I get a 1 year blanket invitation to all matches at that club once their schedule comes out.

I've crossed US customs with firearms at the Calgary airport for an annual hunting trip in Texas for the past few years... I just stated the purpose was 'hunting'. Never had to show any licenses (which I had ready to hand over). 'One rifle and one shotgun'. Ten minutes in secondary for them to validate passport and Form 6NIA and on my way.

I'm wondering if there is a difference between land and air borders in the 'proof' required, or if it's just up to officer's discretion

On a funny side note - when I called the guy at the ATF Temp imports office to check on the status of my application, he said "That name sounds familiar... let me open the spreadsheet". A US government agency is tracking applications for temporary imports on a spreadsheet. I would have assumed some secure database or some integrated system.

That being said, we ALWAYS make sure we have one when crossing. The agent has always taken and looked at it along with checking the serial #'s. Never simply been waived through, ever, without a serial # check.

I have crossed dozens of times and only sent to secondary once where he looked at passports, glanced at form 6s and sent us on our way. All the other times waved through.
Had serial numbers checked twice coming back to Canada and that's it.

Also be ready to prove (if asked) that non-restricted firearms were legally owned in Canada. This could be a bill of sale or form BSF407 from Customs. This is also true of high value items - scopes, red dots, rangefinders etc. Every time you come back to Canada you must be able to prove that you possessed it in Canada prior to your trip if asked. The forms are easy. Bring the items with you, go to any Customs office and ask for an agent to fill it out. They will fill it out with serial numbers (or provide one) and you can show it upon entry back to Canada.

We always go down with handguns. Actually the only time US customs didn't check the serials was at the Peace Bridge. However we got sent to secondary where we sat for 35 minutes, then called to the office next door -where the doors lock behind you-. And sat for 10 minutes, got asked a few questions. Then we were told "we saw you got checked out a border crossing few weeks back so you are good to go" gee thanks for the 45 minutes of wasted time. Lewiston is where we cross from now on.

As for air travel, it's a crap shoot. Totally dependent on the agent on duty. 1st time she let us pass but told us our NIA6 form was filled out wrong. Turns out she had old info. 2nd time the guy did a quick check and let us go.

Over the past 12 years I have spent time in secondary twice. Both times they eventually went out and looked at my two pistols. We spent more time talking about shooting IDPA/USPSA and IPSC then we did on where I was off to. I cross at Abbotsford all the time. Since the CBA got guns I have only been asked to wait in the parking lot for an officer to check my pistols. Before they got pistols it was every time. I think the ladies had a thing for handguns. They, being the officers seem to know their stuff better now than when I first came back with my handguns.

In both cases, coming and going they have a job to do and I just do the yes sir no sir routine. When they are done you are on your way.

Bummer with the Trump shut down holding things up.

Take Care

Bob

Gun Control in the US. Have the Dems refuse to sigh a bill for 5.6 B, shut down the Govt. and there you go, instant Gun Control. The payroll for the 800,000 without a paycheck could cover that in the first week.

where can I find a sample of how to fill it out? how much do you guys list? ammo firearms what else? thanks

frank

Read the directions and fill out the form line by line.
I use a spreadsheet to list all of the firearms I may at some time take down with me.
I also use a spreadsheet for ammo. List all ammo you may take down broken down by caliber. If you load your own list that too.

Thank you for your time and answers, one last thing I'm new to idpa and ipsc when there are matches in usa does the clubs post invitations? How do I get those so I don't have hassles at the border? I know for matches here in Ontario once registered on practiscore it shows complete once approved.

thanks

frank
