Soliciting Opinions for CZ handgun purchase.

Buy a new CZ SP01 Shadow. Plink all you want, but easily employable for most competitions. Parts & accessories are available including holsters. For a 9mm auto under C$1000.00, the SP01 Shadow creams just about every other competitor. If you can name a better 9mm auto with similar features under C$1000.000 or even under $900.00 taxes in, make your case!

Well the PPQ M2 5" meets your criteria along with the SIG 320. Too,the CZ 85 Combat is essentially the same gun with less weight which might appeal to some. The 92 FS will shoot with the Shadow all day long for most. The Shadow wins on popularity but I have not seen to many C Class shooters in IPSC move to A or better just because they bought the Shadow. Nor have I seen many MM shooters in IDPA move to Expert simply by moving to a Shadow either. The Glock 34 has dominated IDPA SSP Division for a number of years and is by far and away the most popular gun in that sport. I know of a shooter or two who do very well with a SIG 226 as well. There are a lot of sold choices out there for the price range you mention.

Hatman you know as well as I do it is the archer not the arrow. I have seen and know of shooters who have spent $1,400 on a Shadow 2 and won't live long enough to ever be able to take advantage of the small but significant features the gun brings to the table. The same can be said for any of the guns I have mentioned including the SP-01 Shadow, a gun I enjoy. Truthfully the new Gen 1 Shadows have really average triggers out of the box. Compare the trigger on a new Shadow1 with a PPQ and you will know what I am talking about. Name me another brand that advertises a 5.6lb trigger pull out of the box and actually delivers. Both my PPQ M2 5" and Match came with 5.6lb triggers tested on a Lyman trigger gauge. I had a new 75B whose trigger was about the same as the Shadow 1 I have in my safe. Heck my friends CZ P10C has a better trigger than my Shadow1.

To the OP if you want a solid all steel pistol in DA/SA look at a 75B/85 Combat used on the EE or a used 92FS. The 92FS is more comfortable in larger hands so if your hand size is medium to small than the75B/85 Combat guns are a better option. Both can be had for a reasonable price and at the most will run $700. I had a 1988 85 Combat with more than 100K rounds through it I am certain that ran like a clock with a trigger that one only finds in the best of guns. If you buy gently used, you will have about $700 to play with over the price of a higher end competition gun that you just don't need. Go for it you won't be disappointed. You got your whole life to decide whether you will ever want a different gun.....you will of course the XZX@#$@#& things seem to multiply by themselves. You just don't need them all right now.

Take care

I strongly recommend you look at:

CZ Shadow 1
CZ 85 Combat
CZ 75B
Beretta 92FS
SIG 226

Those are four great options for a DA/SA pistol for general use and if pressed can be competitive playing the games. Money really is the only defining difference between the four I listed. With a change in the mainspring to around 13# all will shoot about the same for you,and are more than adequate to meet your range needs.

The Shadow2 and the various higher end guns bring features to the table that you are not likely ever need or be able to take advantage of so spend your savings on ammunition and targets.

For your purposes I would stick to an all metal gun, preferably DA/SA. Polymer guns are great if your a cop who has to carry one on his hip all day or for some competitions but for plinking I would stick to the metal guns as described.

Lots of choices. Don't limit yourself as there is no need to. It is a lifetime purchase.

Seriously love this advice! Thank you!

As a fellow lefty, I too understand what you are going through in finding the right pistol.

I started with a CZ 75 in 9mm first. Shot very well and was a joy to shoot. Actually went through two of them. Price was very good for used.
Just would have liked the ambi safety of the 85.
Later, I went with an 85 dual tone in 40 S&W. Was a great pistol...never should have sold it! But I later wanted the newly introduced SP-01 Tactical in 40.
Did quite a bit of shooting with it at our clubs IDPA practice nights. Was a lot of fun to shoot and very accurate. I found that I actually prefer shooting the 40 over the 9. Just a different type of recoil. Yes, more
expensive to shoot, but I just enjoyed it more! In mine, I found the Blazer Brass 180 gr to run without hiccup and pretty clean.
Took me quite a while to get one (SP-01 Tactical in 40), but I do have it now. The extra weight of the SP-01 is nice to shoot. And the triggers are pretty good out of the box. The Tactical has the tritium adjustable sights that I prefer over those on the Shadow or Phantom.

A very nice feature of the CZ's; doesn't matter on your hand size, it fits small, medium and large hands equally well. There's a reason why more military and police forces around the world use it than any other pistol. Reliability!

I have a P-07, P-09 a Shadow plus a couple of others I can't even remember. IMO after research and ownership, they are the best. I have more pistols but these are my favorite. They are all accurate and very well made!

I owned an 85 Combat in about 2007. I very stupidly sold it. It was one of the best pistols I’ve owned, especially in the sub-$2000 price range. If you can find one, but it and don’t look back.

The Prairie deal is a no-brainer. Get the Shadow over the Phantom..both great shooters but the steel gun is a better choice for target and competition, with improved recoil management and less shooter fatigue, etc.
I have shot or owned just about every model of CZ handgun produced, the higher models of Shadows give only slight improvements to the average shooter over a regular Shadow with a few inexpensive springs, and polymer guns are for carrying all day..steel guns are for regular shooting IMO.

I am also a CZ fan. I have a 85b/KADET, 85 combat, SHADOW 1 and a P07 DUTY. The SP01 SHADOW is the best choice- HANDS DOWN. the price of it it is quite good since SHADOW 2 came out. The SHADOW2 is a nice gun but quite heavy for the type of shooting I do(bullseye) There are a number of SHADOW 1's for sale on EE, There is also a CZ75B SA for sale which would be a very nice gun. My 85b/KADET is converted to a SAO with a CZC race hammer and it has the best trigger of all my CZ's. The CZ75B SA also has the heavier full slide, ampidex safety and the beavertail frame, I am very surprised that it hasn't sold yet.

CZ P10C or P07/09 if you're looking for polymer and honestly, P10C feels more comfortable.
Steel frame wise, Shadow 1 or Shadow 2.
Shadow 2 Optics Ready is next on my list after a Ruger GP100.
