Buy a new CZ SP01 Shadow. Plink all you want, but easily employable for most competitions. Parts & accessories are available including holsters. For a 9mm auto under C$1000.00, the SP01 Shadow creams just about every other competitor. If you can name a better 9mm auto with similar features under C$1000.000 or even under $900.00 taxes in, make your case!
Well the PPQ M2 5" meets your criteria along with the SIG 320. Too,the CZ 85 Combat is essentially the same gun with less weight which might appeal to some. The 92 FS will shoot with the Shadow all day long for most. The Shadow wins on popularity but I have not seen to many C Class shooters in IPSC move to A or better just because they bought the Shadow. Nor have I seen many MM shooters in IDPA move to Expert simply by moving to a Shadow either. The Glock 34 has dominated IDPA SSP Division for a number of years and is by far and away the most popular gun in that sport. I know of a shooter or two who do very well with a SIG 226 as well. There are a lot of sold choices out there for the price range you mention.
Hatman you know as well as I do it is the archer not the arrow. I have seen and know of shooters who have spent $1,400 on a Shadow 2 and won't live long enough to ever be able to take advantage of the small but significant features the gun brings to the table. The same can be said for any of the guns I have mentioned including the SP-01 Shadow, a gun I enjoy. Truthfully the new Gen 1 Shadows have really average triggers out of the box. Compare the trigger on a new Shadow1 with a PPQ and you will know what I am talking about. Name me another brand that advertises a 5.6lb trigger pull out of the box and actually delivers. Both my PPQ M2 5" and Match came with 5.6lb triggers tested on a Lyman trigger gauge. I had a new 75B whose trigger was about the same as the Shadow 1 I have in my safe. Heck my friends CZ P10C has a better trigger than my Shadow1.
To the OP if you want a solid all steel pistol in DA/SA look at a 75B/85 Combat used on the EE or a used 92FS. The 92FS is more comfortable in larger hands so if your hand size is medium to small than the75B/85 Combat guns are a better option. Both can be had for a reasonable price and at the most will run $700. I had a 1988 85 Combat with more than 100K rounds through it I am certain that ran like a clock with a trigger that one only finds in the best of guns. If you buy gently used, you will have about $700 to play with over the price of a higher end competition gun that you just don't need. Go for it you won't be disappointed. You got your whole life to decide whether you will ever want a different gun.....you will of course the XZX@#$@#& things seem to multiply by themselves. You just don't need them all right now.
Take care
