Gentlemen, I have a Remington Model 58 16 bore that was made in 1961. It is in near new condition save an area of about 1 square inch on the upper rear receiver. This area had been pitted from poor storage. I draw filed out the pits and polished the area smooth. I degreased the area with acetone and applied Birchwood Casey bluing paste. The receiver will not take the blue. This Birchwood Casey stuff works on everything else I used it on.

Does anyone know what kind of alloy Remington used in the early auto loaders and has anyone experienced this type of issue before?

The 61 cat says solid block of steel with a special treated top matt finish
My guess whatever that matt process was is creating the issue and it may be slightly case hardened there

Yep, I have heated it, applied extra, waited longer still no go. maybe I should try a liquid cold blue instead of the stuff I have. The surface has been filed and polished. I would not think any of the old matt finish is there but you never know.

Finish may be gone but if case hardened in a few thousands nothing will stick to that until removed

I guess I could "matt" the entire top (sighting area) surface with quality flat enamel paint. The gun is being used for everything from ducks to grouse so the matting might not be a bad idea. Something to think about anyways.

Or get the black stuff I did my sp-10 with. It worked great
Give me a minute to look at the name

Blue wonder
Terrible to be losing ones mind and have to go find a package hanging on the wall :(

I am only trying to blue a small section on the top of the receiver. The rest of the gun is like new. I thought maybe nickle or chrome alloy but I don't have any real idea.

Darryl

But an original matt section???

Fix the link some reading here

The entire receiver, save the polished portion, has the same level and quality of blue. No matt finish is evident. Struff I wish I could find some of the old Blue Stag it was very good. Brownells Oxpho Blue looks like it could work but 45.00 a bottle plus shipping is a little much.

UPDATE:
Applied the Birchwood Casey Super Blue. Two applications and it worked like a charm. It left a nice even blue that matches the original Remington blue. I do endorse this product for tough to blue applications.
