Picture of the day

funny - remember singing this in the mess 40 years ago right after we took the CAT
Lyrics
Ob's sturmt oder schneit, Whether it's storming or snowing,
Ob die Sonne uns lacht, Whether the sun is laughing,
Der Tag gluhend heis, The day is glowing,
Oder eiskalt die Nacht. Or cold the night.
Bestaubt sind die Gesichter, Dusty are the faces,
Doch froh ist unser Sinn, But glad is our sense,
Ist unser Sinn; Is our sense;
Es braust unser Panzer, Our tank is roaring,
Im Sturmwind dahin In the storm wind there
Ob's sturmt oder schneit, Whether it's storming or snowing,
Ob die Sonne uns lacht, Whether the sun is laughing,
Der Tag gluhend heis, The day is glowing,
Oder eiskalt die Nacht. Or cold the night.

Not many built, and yet some still exist.

Of course it was. Turdo Sr's Lieberals bought them because a) spares for the Centurions we had were becoming more and more scarce, and b) they got a sweet deal on them.

The only reason why we got Leopard tanks in the 70s is because the Centurions were done. The W. German Chancellor shirt-fronted Pierre Trudeau and told him that if unless Canada wanted to sit at the kiddies table in Europe we better get a viable tank capability right schnell. Suddenly Trudeau decided that tanks were OK.

Trudeau's NATO cuts in 1970 saw us moved down to Lahr in what was basically an ornamental/political role. 4CMBG may have had a useful role in heavy mechanized operations if we had squared it off with a second tank battalion and added a first class AA protection capability.

I was happy to have served with 4CMBG when we were HQ'd at Soest near the Mohne dam. On the order of battle, we were seconded to the 2nd Div BAOR. I agree with the need for additional armour and AA capability if we were to fulfill our role of holding a line at the Weser.

What they had at the time didn't work very well against the "Dam Busters". Standing on the dam between the flak towers gives one a different perspective .....

The Mohne dam was something that the German defenders thought could never be breached by bombs of that era. Well, the Allies proved them wrong.

In fact, the defences at Mohne were the most successful, managing to hit Hopgood's bomber during the attack run.

Another of the targets (the Eder dam) wasn't even defended by anti-aircraft guns, but the raid still suffered 40 percent losses overall, several of the aircraft being shot down on the return leg of the mission.
