cz 455 best way to mount a scope

The only time you really need to use an add on rail is if you want to mount a scope with a 30MM tube. The selection of rings in 30MM that fit the 11MM dove tail are slim to none.

BKL makes very good rings in both 1" and 30mm that will fit both the 3/8" and 11mm dovetails. I use the 30mm BKL rings myself on several of my rifles.

Timely thread! Just picked up Leupold RM highs from Tillsonburg Gun Shop for my 455 FS. Should hopefully clear the irons and bolt throw. Expensive but I just really like Leupold. Will let the gang here know how they work out once they arrive.

If you don't want the expense of a picatinny rail and weaver style rings, there are a lot of rings that will work very well with the 11mm dovetail grooves on the rifle. There are many brands to choose from including BKL, Burris, Leupold, Talley, Warne. You can even get solid yet inexpensive rings from Amazon.ca for less than $25 that will not budge.

In the words of an old Scotsman I once knew regarding "Scotch and Soda"; "If they wanted that stuff in there; they would have put it in in the factory"... IMO, the same goes for putting a scope mounting system on a scope mounting system, so you can mount a scope. Increased complexity = increased risk. I too have picked up an inexpensive set of very solid rings the correct height for me, and have them on my 455 Canadian .17 HMR to carry an older Tasco Varmint 6 X 24 Varmint scope. It never moves; and saves an ounce or two of weight.

Of course, if you just have the need to say "Piciitinni"; do what you like LOL.

I have 6 455's with a variety of rings that fit the dovetail. They all seem to work okay. :)

DILLIGAF: Nice pic of your Canadian! I have one in each caliber. The 455's have edged out my other rimfires for go to gopher defence. :d

I know I’m going to get some flak but when I got my 455 stainless synthetic I was desperate to shoot it and could not justify paying close to $100 for rings (with shipping) and $$$ for the DIP rail after paying $475 for the rifle...... I ended up buying the ‘Sun Optic’ rings from Cabelas, sub $30, and fit the 11mm dovetail just dandy. Lapped then to near perfection and couldn’t be happier. Every other set of rims on my rifles are Leupold, and I thought this one would be no exception. No plans to change it though.

I like the Burris Singature 11mm rings that attach directly to the dovetail. You can move the scope back and forth to acccomodate heavy clothing or different shooters and/or take it off completely to use the iron sights. Not sure why I’d put another rail on the built in rail, seems a little redundant to me.

That is what I ended up with as well after looking at several options

Does anyone know if medium rings (example: burris zee rings med) and a DIP 25 MOA base give enough clearance to mount a scope with a 50mm objective? Or do you have to go to high rings?

Ultimately it depends on the outer diameter of the objective bell. The lens may be exactly 50mm, but what is the diameter of the bell? For example, I just measured a scope with a 40mm objective (I don't have any 50's) and it's objective bell is about 51.5mm. Some scopes have AO which gives them an even wider diameter.

The DIP rail adds about .230" in height. The following chart shows the heights of the various Burris rings.

Thanks for the detailed response!

The scope I am considering (Sightron S-TAC 4x20) has a bell size of 58.4mm and a 30mm tube, meaning I need to clear 58.4/2=29.2mm or 1.15 inches. So with high zee 30mm rings I get 0.93+0.230=1.16. Seems like a very tight fit, but it should work.

Holy crap! You will need quite a cheek riser!

I dont think it would be that bad. Its from the scope ring base till the middle of the scope tube. Distance between the scope ring base and the bottom of the tube is 0.57 inch afaik (1.16inch- 0.59, since half 30mm tube is 15mm).

If im wrong then, im gonna need a serious cheek riser or a smaller scope.

The CZ's with the "hogback" style stocks, such as the Lux, Standard, and Super Match models, are designed for iron sights and require a bit of adjustment to use a scope. The American (or Canadian version) and the Varmint have stock that is designed specifically for scope use.

Comparison between stock styles.

Sounds like you solved your problem already. For info the pic below is on a CZ 455 FS with Leupold RM Rimfire High mounts. 1.56' bell on the scope and this clears the rear irons and bolt throw:

But given the curvature I might repurpose to another .22.
