A few years back, I was looking for a CIL 830 (Savage 340) and knew an older fella at church had one, so offered to buy his. He said he was going to keep it for now, but he'd give it to me if he didn't want it anymore. I thought nothing of it, but today he took me aside and said he wanted to give it to me. I asked him if I could give him some money, or if he had family who wanted it, or or or. Nope, he wanted to give it to me.
Now, I already had found one, but it had the terrible birch stock (although it was checkered) and had no peep sight mount holes. The one he gave me has a much better hardwood stock, has the peep sight holes and the scope mount holes, and has the shorter carbine-length barrel! Kind of excited--going to refinish it, see if it's possible to mount the scope and peep at the same time with the sidemount, and if so, will have the ultimate low-budget scout-type rifle, I think!
