A few years back, I was looking for a CIL 830 (Savage 340) and knew an older fella at church had one, so offered to buy his. He said he was going to keep it for now, but he'd give it to me if he didn't want it anymore. I thought nothing of it, but today he took me aside and said he wanted to give it to me. I asked him if I could give him some money, or if he had family who wanted it, or or or. Nope, he wanted to give it to me.

Now, I already had found one, but it had the terrible birch stock (although it was checkered) and had no peep sight mount holes. The one he gave me has a much better hardwood stock, has the peep sight holes and the scope mount holes, and has the shorter carbine-length barrel! Kind of excited--going to refinish it, see if it's possible to mount the scope and peep at the same time with the sidemount, and if so, will have the ultimate low-budget scout-type rifle, I think!

Its always nice when that happens, Ive been given a couple over the years as well. I'm sure he feels good knowing its in good hands and will be enjoyed for many more years to come.

I know it's a rifle that many poo-poo on here, but it's got almost every feature I want except an adjustable trigger and laminate stock (which I can buy from Boyds if I really want it).

I plan on shooting a truckload of deer and bears with it.

Some poo poo them , not me . My best friends late father carried one exactly like yours for many years . He was born , raised and lived his entire life on a farm north of Meadow Lake , Saskatchewan . That man shot more , deer , bear , moose and elk with that rifle ( iron sights ) than most people I can think of . After his death , his son used it once to take a very nice White-Tail east of Edmonton . He has since given it too his nephew , who thinks it's the coolest rifle there is . The old 340's weren't fancy rifles , but they put a lot of meat on the table over the years . It's definitely capable of filling the back of your truck . Good Luck and post a pic if you can .

Yes pictures would be nice, it was a nice jester of the gift he must be a decent guy..

I'll try to get some up later. Not much to look at, none of them ever were, but I'm looking forward to shooting it.

I think it must have the earlier-style ejector, as the bolt certainly feels different than my other rifle. That's good, it probably means the spare mag I bought for Rifle #1, which didn't fit, will probably fit this rifle. Another bonus!

I like these little rifles for some reason. Having said that, I've seen a lot of them over the years that were split either in the wrist or at the mag well. What gives? Can't be from .30/30 recoil could it? These were all 340's and 325's. I've never actually held an 830.

I would image horses and scabbards would have done a few.
Incidents crossing creeks, fences, vehicle doors, tailgates and such
could be at fault also.

Great , now I want one .

The good thing is that they're relatively cheap. I've got a springfield branded version that someone put the older stevens butterknife style bolt handle on. It's such a nice light short gun, great for in the thicker stuff, and the scope that you can see the sights under are fantastic.

I've got one of the Bsquare mounts on mine and i like it much better than the older weaver type i've seen on others.

I had the Weaver sidemount on a Model 94 and didn't like the off-canter mounting, so I put a Sun Optics on my 340, even though I had 50% of the parts needed for the Weaver kicking around in a drawer. Definitely do not regret it. I put a lace-on leather cheekpad so I could use the scope better, as it's high
