Most powerfull antique status revolver ?

I know antique handguns are not considered firearms but can you actually go out and use these for hunting?

You cannot hunt with a handgun, "antique" or otherwise. You CAN carry an "antique" revolver if not concealed and discharge it anywhere you can legally discharge a firearm.

Really though you stand a better chance trying to out run it. Lol first guy to shoot a bear, with an antique category gun will get us all black listed. All I carry is bear spray and a good quality knife. And I hike in bear country all the time.

^ This. Personally I think that relying on an antique handgun for bear defense is a bad idea. A couple years ago I came face to face with a big bear. I had a 308 which would have easily put it down with a well placed shot, but if that bear decided to charge me from that distance then the chances of dropping him on time would have been slim.

I think the best option is a light, short barreled shotgun with slugs. And if you aren't in open country, have it in ready carry position.

How about a Snider "Howdah" pistol. They used regular Snider loads, I believe. 480 grain bullet, 70 grains powder. I assume an original would be a legal antique.

If i could find one like this in very good condition with the antique status, i would buy it. The bigger the bore, the better. Any repro one are nice but still they are restricted.:(

That is just crazy talk from city people..Thinking a antique is going to save you from a pissed off grizzly charge..
A modern firearm and practise ,practise, practise
Or bear spray and make sure everyone has their own can
And practise with the spray also

Not cheap... But hey, why not? Try and find an 1847 Colt Walker. Possibly the most powerful revolver up until the event of the 357 Magnum...

This is a pretty good answer on two accounts, first is the powder charge they use and the second is the gun itself will make the best club of all the antiques mentioned.

Ohhh and for the spray proponents just make sure the breeze is blowing your way a bit so you season yourself somewhat...saves the bear from doing it.

Here in Ontario , you can use an Antique Handgun for hunting , except no big game. If you want proof , then read the
Ontario Out of doors magazine , (Volume 50 , issue 7 , Aug. - 2018 ) on page # 22 , where ,,,,,,, David Critchlow
( MNFR Enforcement Specialist ) answers this question .

Others claim the .455 is the most potent Antique Hg. for bears. After test shooting mine in several pieces of wood , I believe
it would only piss him off. The Howdah would be the answer as it was made for attacking tigers . Finding an original ( antique)
would be expensive .

Clearly a short NR shotgun is the only real answer.

I remember shooting a friend's .455 at an oil drum. Bang. Pause. Bong. Made dents that looked like ball pein hammer blows.

I read a book about an African big game hunter , who hunted in the 1940's. He had little use for HG , then , but did say that
if he choice one it would be a .45 cal ( .455 or .45 acp ) with FMJ bullets for best penetration . We now know that hard cast
SWC lead is the best 4 penetration .

If it was a bear charge or a bluff??
Either way National Park zero tolerence for firearms of any type..
Those 2 clowns riding fast in the back country making almost zero noise..
Go figure?? You have to give the animals space and time..
