CGN's shooting the Ross

I just had a thought, my M-10(don't know if that is the proper designation), has had the barrel cut back and re-crowned to 24 inches, the barrel was obviously professionally shortened and recrowned and the original foresight replaced properly. To me this means the sight settings are going to be screwed up even if they calculated the proper height for the new position of the front sight(parallax?). I had to crank the rearsight down to zero to get it bang on at 100 yards, last time I had it out. Haven't tried it at a greater range, should try that, if I shot it at 100 and left the setting at 100 it provided something resembling a six o'clock hold.

Six o'clock hold is probably the best way to get a good sighting reference on those sight setups. My best groups are always the result of a six o'clock hold and front post focus with ANY of my milsurps.

mag problem.

Have you checked that bolt release is in "up" position? Otherwise if "down" then mag cutoff position wont allow cartridge to be picked out of mag.

I was thinking a sporterized M10 (no chance of restoring) would make an excellent rifle for the Burns Lake 1000 yard shoot here in BC.

If I could find one with a really good barrel it might be a good candidate for a conversion to 303 Epps. I think I could scare a few people, especially with iron sites :)

Anyone know how much a ream job would cost?

Here's a pic of mine. 1916 M10. Bore is mint. I also have a bayonet for it. Very accurate and it just loves cast bullets. Jeese those triggers sure are sweet aren't they;) Mine has GWVA stamped onto the stock, anyone know what that stands for? Just guessing, but could it be Great War Veterans Association?

Very nice Ross there Hi-standard. Any issue markings on the butt? Also, what are some of the best loads in your particular Ross? Havent tried cast bullets in mine yet.

Would it then feed from the magazine?

As far as I know there shouldn't be a problem. The shoulder area of the cartridge gets re-shaped but that's about it, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Supposedly in a strong action (P14) you can get nearly 30-06 velocities from a 303 Epps cartridge. I think 6.5x303 would be awesome too, but it means rebarreling.

Just a very faint crown with Quebec writen under it probably the Ross rifle Co. logo? and what appears to be a C.E.F. I5 or T5? Canadian Expeditionary Force maybe? I have found 39.0 gr. of 47SL under a Lee 185 gr. lynotype bullet to be very accurate. I've also started toying with 12.0 gr. of Unique under the same bullet. I first shot the Unique load in my 30-06 Remington 700, and it was deadly accurate. I haven't yet tweaked it in 303 British yet, but when I get it accurate I'll let you know. 39 to 41 gr. of Winchester 760 should prove half decient as well. I find if you keep the bullets down to about 1800 to 2000 fps range, is the most accurate. By the way, Unique doesn't require the use of any fillers. It is not placement sensitive, and with only 10 to 14 gr. of powder it's great cheap fun:D
