Would like to pick up an older used over and would rather not buy turkish. Anyone recommend a site sponsor or another vendor that has decent selection? Anything from a few hundred to a few grand, Id rather buy once. Thanks

I prefer the looks of the sxs but I'm pretty well set on an o/u. Mainly for skeet and upland hunting, occasionally coming to the farm to hammer bucks. I've been pouring thru tradex they have great selection.
Excuse my ignorance but what is a B gun?

B gun is Beretta or Browning. hard to beat in their price range. Lots of nice stuff in the EE.

I would look for a good Baikal O/U from Trade Ex. They are priced right. Look through them all and study them. Little issues like missing sling swivels and beads make little difference. Stock cracks and broken or missing parts do make a difference. For pure reliability and longevity the IJ 12 models come to mind. Extractors and double triggers make for a long lasting trouble free gun. Baikal makes a great shotgun but the single trigger/ejector models can develop issues and parts are hard to find. The IJ 12 models are choked Full and Fuller but the open barrel (bottom) shoots slugs surprisingly well. Ask Anthony (owner) for more detailed pictures of your choices they will gladly supply them. Trade Ex's customer service is beyond reproach. I have one O/U and it is a Trade Ex IJ12.

When you stated that you didn't want to buy Turkish and just buy once then the automatic default make is Beretta or Browning,..... B guns. There are lots of other choices out there but the used B guns generally represent best value for the money spent.

Many people will tell you that an O/U is better than a S x S for shooting. I am one of those that have shot both but mostly
S x S since the late 1960's . I love S x S better than O/U . From Winchester M-21 , to Ithaca Flues , to AYA 's.
Shoot what you like or do well with , & don't worry what others like .,,,,,,,,,,, My 2 cents .

There is/was a nice Beretta SxS in the EE last week.
Shoot me a pm for the name of someone here almost local to me and a member of CGN who likely has a Browning SxS that might fit the bill of just under 2k.
There are a couple also in the EE under 500.oo and not of Turkish decent either.

I'm assuming that was aimed at me. I'm a big proponent of side by side shotguns and they're my gun of choice of carrying guns for upland game bird hunting however, the op sounds as if he doesn't have a lot of experience or he probably wouldn't be posing so general a question about what it is he's after, therefore I do believe for someone like him then the o/u is the better choice. There just may be a reason why you see many more o/u guns out there than sxs guns!

Like many with long and varied experience, I prefer to hunt with a quality side by side and I frequently use them on the range for pleasure and practice. Also like many, I find that the over/under is preferable for competition, almost no serious competitive shooters using a side by side today. Try to visualize how you will be mostly using this gun and how it will bring you the most pleasure. Your budget maximum will allow both a good used side by side and a good used over/under, then you would have the best of both worlds. Don't forget, if you really enjoy using a nice double, your first purchase won't likey be your last. Guess how I know?

Unhinged, maybe share where you are. For instance if local some members might say "let's get together and you can shoot my Beretta ### or my Citori field grade or my Cynergy or my 101." You really should shoot a gun to get a sense that its what you want and will shoot well and be happy with.

Agreed. Try a skeet club. Just show up introduce yourself and ask nicely if you can shoulder some guns. Im sure most shooters will gladly let you if you explain yourself

No , Falconflyer , my comments where not aimed at you , but I am glad to see you like S x S shotguns also . I use then for many things , with
upland game birds being # 1. For that I started with a Stevens 311 in 20 ga. , then an Ithaca Flues in 20 & 16 ga. , then a Winchester 21 , in 16ga.
then a AYA M-25 in 20 ga. , then a AYA M-3 in .28 ga. I sold the 311 , but still have all the rest . I like the 28 ga. the most .
I have others in larger ga. for other purposes . In CAS there are more S x S 's. Enjoy what you like , I say .
My original comments where just to show that for some people , the S x S is still #1 .

For upland birds, I use SxS guns exclusively, but for regular clays shooting, most SxS shotguns are built to be light, not to stand up to high volume shooting. The Browning BSS and the Winchester model 21 are exceptions, but the Model 21 are quite expensive. I wpuld be looking for a good used B gun.

For CAS, it's obligatory to have period style guns and I don't think there were too many o/u's in the old west!

For those who asked I'm located on Vancouver Island. I pull wrenches in the mill on weekends but if anyone's around mon-wed I will gladly meet up and supply the shells. I am inclined to go with an o/u as well, figure it's an easier transition from my current pump, but I'm not against a sxs either if the right one comes up. I see the internet is flooded with them and I want your guys experience to help avoid making a poor choice (my last two brand new guns are both still gone for warranty...)

Any thoughts on the older italian guns like franchi or rizzini I see on trade website? Or am I better off spending a little more on a beretta? I probably know the answer to this
