I am thinking of buying a Swiss Arms Black Special, but I am reluctant due to the high price tag. Are they worth the dough? Why are they so pricey anyway?

I enjoyed mine then sold it... If you have the $ I suggest giving it a try as it is one fine rifle. I guess it all really depends what you want it for.

First of all they are made in Switzerland and they are not cheap to make, second of all they are non-restricted so they are worth the extra money, match grade trigger, ambi-safety, night sights front/rear, winter trigger, adjustable gas system, side-folding stock, true the magazines are pricey and so are accessories - but so are all the goodies for an AR15 .

They are awesome. I'm purposely not dropping the price on mine not because I'm a stingy but because I subconciously do not wish to sell it.

My CQB runs fine. Since I only shoot it at the range, and I have the plastic recoil spring guide, I don't really have any trouble with it.

Sure, there are some short commings with the CQB, but overall it is very nice. Well worth the price to me.

Since you asked 'is it worth it?' This is subjective but here are my thoughts but I am sure others may disagree.

Unless you shoot alot in the bush, the non restrict. status makes this very appealling but if all you do is go to the range for plinking, u can get an AR which shoots the same 223 for half the $$$ which you can use the 10rd AR mags.

If you want it for varminting, I prefer a bolt action gun ie. Rem 700 for 1/3 or less of the price which IMO offers better accuracy and ability to tweak and mod. ie trigger job, bedding, stock etc. Also use the $$$ to put good glass on it.

The LCF is great w/ the PE90 but the AR offers more options and accessories by far. The mag price is too high $80 for 5 rder vs a $35 RRA 10rd AR mag and IMO so is the rifle but the market will support this price by paying it so why would the importer sell for less. There is only one importer and they try to control pricing which is fine but this means little or no competition ie. Wolverine who bought them from the importer sold brand new ones awhile back for $2800 which I trust didn't sit well w/ the importer. It is my understanding that there are only a few hundred rifles in Canada and shipments are irregular so supply/demand dictates that the price is high.

Can't speak to the service rifle competitors as I think most ppl shoot ARs but will let others speak on that venue.

It is well built, accurate and has a proven functionality so it is reliable. If you want one to add to the collection if you already have an AR and other LCF rifles, yah get it but for the money, I would get a AR10 personally... I sold my Swiss even though I liked it but couldn't justify keeping all that money in that one gun and I wanted other toys after the novelty wore off.

There are other rifles that do the same function but it is like short barrel AR and shotties, if you have full size AR or 870, you may still want a more expensive 11.5", 14.5" to add to the collection just because it is cool to have.

Also a certain amount of elitism may exist w/ the rifle simply because of the price tag. A good analogy is the Mercedes brand in Canada is deemed a luxury brand here and can charge more for it say than in other countries but it serves the same function as a Toyota but status is part of the appeal whereas in other countries, Mercedes offers more utilitarian brand offering ie. trucks etc. There is pride in owning one since everybody has an AR...

So the same question would apply to you and your HK UM? that you were dwelling upon selling/keeping... 'is it worth it'? Now multiply that x2.

Good post Cover 6.

I've seen a few Swiss Arms rifles around here, including one for sale at the gun store. I've heard they are reliable, well built and fairly accurate. That being said the cost was initially double that of the AR-10 I bought. Even after adding a match trigger and tactical grip the costs are significantly more.
For the same cost I got an AR-10 with match trigger, a few minor upgrades and a Zeiss 6.5-20x 50mm scope.

I shoot at the range so this was a no brainer for me. For varminting or hunting I have other rifles. Mostly bolt action. You can almost buy three bolt actions for the price of a Swiss arms.

Plus frankly I didn't really like the looks of it. I know that takes second place but the looks didn't work for me. Whereas I always have a big smile on my face when I open the safe and see that AR-10.

The new piston AR-15s have my attention. The HK one would be nice.

Like anything it's subjective. If price isn't a concern then I'm sure it would make a fine addition to any collection.

Straight out of the box you can shoot sub-minute of angle. I have a number of high end black rifles and the only one I prefer over the Sig Green Special .223 is my Sig AMT .308. It is well worth the price........rigrat

It's expensive for the same reason all other Swiss-made things are expensive. 1) Swiss workers have some of the highest salaries in the word and 2) Swiss manufacturers are known for their attention to detail and great quality control (unlike their North American counterparts, who seem to be more interested in cost reduction and taking as many shortcuts as possible). Whether or not the extra quality is worth the 100% premium is entirely a personal choice.

this rifle doesnt need any tweeking or trigger job, it makes tight groups at 100 right out of the box.

and you wont be another one of those AR loves...AR's are LEGO's gor CGN
