Official 2019 Wild Turkey Thread

Makes sense.
The price of some of these big heavy decoys are absurd.
I'd like to find something light, maybe pop-up, that's effective and not too expensive.

My jake decoy is a foam pop up type I bought at tsc a few years ago for about 10.00. It looks pretty good, is pretty much weightless, and rolls up to carry easily. I think they had hens at the time as well, can't remember.

Sail still carries those type. Cabelas might as well. And yes they have hens and jakes.

Although not very detailed they are big and have a great shape from a far. They sway nicely in the wind as well. But up close they look awful lol but hey, if they work!

So there are two primary “turkey times”, sunrise to 7ish, and 9ish to noonish.

What do you do between turkey times?

A. Hunt straight through. Never give up.
B. Get comfy, have a nap.
C. Back to the homestead for chores, then back to the woods when they’re done.
D. Ain’t nobody got time for that. If they’re henned up, I’m goin home.
E. ........

Simultaneous combination of A and B. :)

Waking from a nice little catnap on a warm spring afternoon, under a beautiful shady tree, with a gobbler sounding off from nearby...is one of life's special pleasures. :)

Big Rog.

Hunting with my partner naping in turn there is 50/50 chance of being woken up by the sound of the turkey or the report of a 12 ga. Either way gets the blood pumping.

Is your partner making intermittent calls during your nap?

Ironically I've had best success mid-morning and late afternoon.

Not really “ironic” anymore as I understand it. Post breakfast hunts seem to be becoming the norm I think.

Thinking about it I'm getting most of my turkey around 9 in the morning the pressure is down and the birds start walking again.
I'm leaning on my favorite tree and listening waiting for the story to unfold.

No idea. Lol.

To be honest weve found that less is more. Once we call and get a definite response we tend to shut up and just let them come in on their own. We figure every call risks doing something weird to put them off, so less is more.

That’s a balance I’ve yet to master.

I take a break and hit up the small local rural cafes for great food and local talent.

This year ill be running combinations of 5 flextone decoys. Light weight. Highly detailed. Well designed. All 5 fit in my decoy bag andweigh less than or equal my shotgun.
Ive got a tom and jake with 3 hens.

Opening day decisions are which gun to take?

In an attempt to get this thread going again has anyone tried flight control wadded ammo thru more open chokes? Im going to pattern a fixed mod choke if it ever stops raining

I only have one turkey gun. 870 with 23" barrel, turkey choke high vis sights DIY camo courtesy of tremclad. Its good enough and it works.

Nothing close to my hunting spot and its a 30 min hike in so its just a backpack full of snacks and a long peaceful morning.

I do "A"... I go hard from first light through 7 PM... or until my one bird per day is filled... once it is filled I scout right until dark and seek permission to new properties... since I live five hours from where I hunt, this is my only time in the woods for birds and to get in scouting for the current and future seasons.
