Almost ready to buy my first pistol, need some advice.

Glad I came back to this tread what a good idea to train with snap caps randomly loaded into a mag. Going to try this exercise this weekend!

Bodain/OP, yes I mentioned a 1911 because of all pistols I've owned, and *had to* pick one, the 1911 would be it. But in all honesty I too shoot 9mms the most often (my Walthers) because of 'bullet-economics' lol. Paper targets downrange won't know the difference and trigger/recoil management about the same I find on a polymer 9 vs steel .45.

I wouldn't spend too much time on this debate though - because I know of zero people with a restricted license who have only one pistol in their safe!

Cheers.

I love the look of the 1911, especially the springfield. Just a nice pistol... and hell they've been around forever and a day. Probably means they're reliable.

^ + .22 kit. This combo gets you the most range time per $ spent on ammo. The .22 CZ is one of the few reliable conversion kits on the market with "good enough" precision.

Hard to give a better advice. Cz 75 shadow plus 22lr kadet kit.
It is the fastest path to good accuracy in any caliber.

Starting with a big caliber off the bat would make your learning curve longer and may (most likely) create bad habits and seal bad technics into muscle and mental memory.

I hope you take the advice as it is based on experience and training with great coaches from the start

for a first gun, 9mm 9mm 9mm 9mm 9mm 9mm.

I can say with certainty that A) No matter what your first gun won't be your last, and B) You won't ever regret buying a good 9mm.

If I were to get into handguns right now, which I'm not - I have too many, I would go with 2, specifically Walther PPQs in 22LR and 9mmNATO.
i find them to be the guns I like the most right now.

I'm also a huge fan of the Jerichos; I own several.

And, in my very personal opinion, going to a bigger calibre than 9mm for your first handgun is plain silly.

OP: At some point you're either going to listen to the advice you asked for (get a 9mm) or you're going to do whatever you want and get a hand cannon, lol. Just remember Mr. No Flinch, we told you so.

When i first got my RPAL, i got myself a Desert eagle 44 mag Platinium gold.
I only had fired a mag of 45 ACP previously.
Go with what you want, the fun is in the choice.

Good shooting.

I'm not going to get a .22LR, but I'm steering away from .40SW and .45ACP.

I'm about 98% sure I'm going to get a 9mm now. Really like the 92FS I posted earlier in the thread.

I'm taking this advice to heart, and like I said to the gentleman above, 98% sure I'll end up going 9mm... on cost of ammo alone really.

No need to be a ####. I'm listening to everyone who has more experience, and have greatly amended my goals to be more in line with the reality of of purchasing my first pistol. A 9mm is almost certainly going to be my first pistol.

There seems to be lots of great pistols in 9mm, and there's a few that I'm really fond of after watching some videos and doing some research. 92FS at the top, with P226 and CZ 75 close behind. I need to get them in my hands to really determine which one I'd go with.

92 is a solid choice. If going striker, let me recommend a Walter P99 AS. It’s the ‘oldest’ pistol I own and still believe it to be the standard by which all strikers should be measured by. Even Glocks.

No hornets list, let keep on topic and help out OP.

You thought I was being a ####? lol. You need thicker skin on this forum bud.

I hope you find that perfect first pistol.

Cheers!

If you finally decide to go with a 9mm, with a budget of 1500$, you must consider the CZ Shadow 2.

A quality 1911 in 45acp is also tons of fun.

Hey, thanks fore the comments. The P99 looks like a great pistol, but it looks like it has a small grip? Hard to tell in pics, but I have large hands. Do you think that'd be a concern?

I vote for SIG P226 or 92FS/M9 very good choice indeed!

Thanks man! I appreciate the validation on my top choices thus far. :)

Maybe "being a ####" was too much, I guiess being cheeky and trying to get a response from me by calling me "mr no flinch" would have been more appropriate. It seems like you were just joking around, and I still appreciate the feedback. Thanks for contributing to the thread, and if you have any more suggestions I'd be happy to hear them.

I'll check that pistol out, from what I've seen of CZ's they look like great firearms.

The CZ 75 SP-01 is on sale at FOC. I highly recommend it.

If you want a great 45, the Ruger SR1911 is a dream.

Love the wood handle on the SR1911. What a beaut!

Really digging the CZ 75 in urban grey.

Thanks for the suggestions!

It is a bit small—it is a little shorter top to bottom—but the backstrap is replaceable to add a bit more bulk—it's the black section in my pic below (this is the smaller one).

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the pistols you're looking at—I own or have owned most of them (or variants thereof) and have enjoyed shooting all of them. I've written detailed posts on a number of them—the "About Me" section of my user profile has the links.

ahh, the good ole P99... Debut'd in James Bond's "The world is not enough" IIRC .

One of these looks 9.5/10 on the ### scale with a threaded barrel and suppressor (OR fake can for us Canadians... welp)

The 9mm version to me looks a little bit nicer with a lighter slide (mine's a .40). I waffled for years on buying one before I picked this up a couple of years ago—I enjoy it even more than I was expecting.

If I go 92FS, I plan a similar colour. :)
