The 1/4" @ 50 Yards Frustration Club Thread

Interesting club, maybe someone can sponsor me in for the beer because the best I can do at 50 yards is maybe moa. Some fancy shooters here :)

I see there’s a Walther for sale in the EE that shoots 1/4” groups at 50 yards off a bipod. That shouldn’t last too long

With SK Match +, no less. Must be one of those "it shot one (or two) really tight groups once, so... that's how accurate it is 'if you do your part'". Something smells like B and ends with a T.

That's very nice shooting. The best I've done so far is a few three out of five sub .25" groups.

Indeed, I would sure hope a 2500x would shoot so well ;) Next gun for me, I've got my eye on what's happening with the V-3 Turbo pistols Calfee has been hyping. If it's at all possible, I want to try and get one built. This year's tax refund should get me halfway there  Post up some of those 3/5 targets, what beer will you have? :d

I will post he two ¼" at 50 targets I have shot....hoping to repeat with my SUHL 150 this spring.
22forever, great shooting!! Dave.

So, I'm just going to drown my sorrows now with a fresh pint of homebrewed New England Style IPA, liberally hopped with Motueka, Kohatu, Nelson Sauvin, Zythos, and El Dorado for a tropical fruit/citrus delight in my glass.

Personally, I thought it was a unique take on a cream ale using whipped cream, but that trick seems better suited to a nice milk stout than an IPA of any stripe

Are you talking about the one with the cracked stock? Not worth the asking price with the stock damage. I wonder if he can back up his claims of 1/4" at 50 yards with more than a pic of one group.

This season I'll try to get five sub .25" targets (or at least four) with a couple or three rifles that might be up to the challenge, one of them new and unfired as of yet.

I'm pretty sure you've got one that will do it, and a real sleeper too. I'm looking forward to that.

A few things have to come together. A very good rifle and very good ammo to start, together with next to no wind. A bit of experience helps, as would a wee bit of good luck.

in a nut shell, this is it.
You can compensate for wind but most of the time it is a quess, wind direction and speed can be very challing to master, particularry a head wind that is off by a fee degrees.

Was out attempting the challenge this past Sunday, wind was gusty/twitchy. I did my best to wait for the "lulls", but the groups were definitely getting pushed around. I am no wind guru. Had one shot drift right on the top left bull, then a vertical dropper on the bottom left bull. Once again, a mere 2 shots out of 25 away from success. Talk about a biscuit burner! I revisited setting 190 on my Harrell's tuner, some ammo I tested shot well, others not so good. Some known good lots did poorly, so my conclusion was that setting 190 is not where I want to be, the rifle still acts too much like it's naked barrel at that setting. I did better up around 295, so next range trip that's where I'll go back to.

That is a surprisingly elusive accomplishment. I have shot many, many groups that easily make the ¼" at 50M,
but to get 5 consecutive groups on one target that qualify.....very tough!!
I have a couple of targets with 5 groups, all under .250", but they do not qualify in the challenge because of too many
extra holes in the "sighter" My fault, entirely. Both were shot with Remington rifles, a 40X and a M37. [ see pg 24] D.

Love those old Remingtons

My 2500X silhouette rifle when fed Midas will do it, but I am more interested in shooting 10-shot 2moa groups. Offhand. :)

The bench proves the rifle, off the bench and especially offhand prove the shooter.

Edited to add: I absolutely get the fun of chasing tiny groups off the bench, but I do have to wonder why there’s never a thread about the accuracy we can produce when we get off the sandbags?

I put in a diligent effort towards 1/4" yesterday, burned quite a bit of ammo. Was a little chilly, wind was somewhat calm to start in the morning then picked up to fairly gusty as the day progressed. Shot my last box of Polar Biathlon, which has been a pretty good lot of ammo for me giving some great 100 yard results over the last year. This is perhaps my "nearest miss" for 1/4". Still 2 shots short, but at least it was just on one bull this time . I'm starting to think much of the $$ ammo they call "match grade" actually just sucks, and it is difficult to obtain a quality lot by buying a brick of any brand blindly. There is a reason competitive benchrest shooters lot test before buying their ammo, and that is to sort through the crap just to get some ammo that will allow them to have a chance at winning. My sorrows will be drowned in this fine pint of German style Pils, as the juicy/hazy IPA keg was polished off the other week.

Start one up! Once I knock off 1/4" from my bucket list, I really ought to get to practicing my offhand shooting for Silhouette this year....

Hey Chilly, yes I have run the Polar over a chronograph, was a few years ago though. I lost quite a bit of chrony data from the app on my phone when I got a new one the other year, didn't transfer over for some reason :(. Digging through some old RFC threads, I posted the data from Polar shot through my 455 Lilja Bentz chambered drop-in barrel in late October 2016 (so cool weather, not winter weather). It averaged 1059 fps, min 1036, max 1081. Recent SK Biathlon chrono numbers from this winter were 1043 and 1038 avg in two different rifles. I would say it is designed to be SV ammo in cold weather, and so might run a little hotter in summer.

My biggest frustration is that the range I'm a member of does not have a 50 yd bunker anymore :(
So I can't even try the challenge.
