Who will be hunting with an Enfield this fall?

Not me....not ever. But that's because I think that ALL Enfields and .303's shoul be burned and melted down and be made into more usefull metal and firewood. You asked....so that's my opinion. Good luck to you though, or better luck to anything that you shoot with those POS's

No wonder you have a reputation for making such intelligent reply's. :slap: :bsFlag:

I believe we were asked if we'd be taking one hunting, not if we give extreme reactions to simple questions.
I'm not going to go down the "Enfields won 2 world wars" track because clearly superior reliability is not a strength for you.
But if you lived here in Oz and one of my mates found out you'd said that about Enfields.........well, lets say he IS happy to use them, is a crack shot with No1 MkIII iron sights, so much so that when the scope fell off his 22-250 when spotlighting foxes one night he used his Lithgow SMLE instead and bagged 10 bunnies and a fox at out past 200yds with it.
He does have a temper, mind you, and doesn't bear fools and also does good work with a shovel and a shallow grave.

Is your tool scoped or will you be using iron sights?
Whether you have iron sights or a scope, gitrdun, you are definitely a tool.

My present Enfield is not a 303, she's a 303/25 built on a 1914 ShtLE action and has an old Bisley Deluxe 3-9x40 scope.
And she will DEFINITELY be out hunting with me.
If things run to plan I'll also be picking up a Martini Enfield in 303, which afterall is still an Enfield, and it'll come along to see how well she shoots with the original iron sights.

I'll be bringing my sporterized Mk1 No4 with me because if all of my sister's come out hunting, we tend to be short a gun. I imagine I'll still use my BAR, or perhaps my Whelan though.
Not that I don't like the Lee or the .303. It still has its peep site, and unfortunatly as far as hunting goes, I've always used a scope so I feel uncomfortable with it. I take it to the range and always shoot a box through it at 100 and 200m. I do well offhand at 100m, but I'm hitting low at 200m off the rest with the site flipped up to 200m. I always use 180g.

I will be using one of mine for deer this fall, not sure about open sights or scope yet. Contrary to what some people say  it is an effective calibre and can be as accurate as any other hunting rifle....

Much as I think 30-06s are ho-hum, that is a gorgeous M-17.
I still believe the M-17 is a better rifle than the Springfield.
There were certainly more M-17s given to US GIs in WW1 than Springfields.

I'll be using my No4Mk2, with all the wood still on it, and an old Weaver Micro-trac 1.5-4.5x20 on a Cad-Technik mount.

If I miss, it won't be because of the rifle. And if I hit, there is nothing in gitrdun's gun cabinet that will kill a deer any more dead than my Enfield.

Whats so "ho-hum" about the 30-06??????
Well, the 30-06 is like white bread.
Everyone buys it and it does the job just fine but it wasn't the primary service cartridge for Oz, or for Canada for that matter, and I have no romantic feelings toward it whatsoever.
In fact 30 cals in general make me yawn.
It's a US imperative that 30 cal was better than anything else and it's the reason why we have 30-30 and 308 and 30-06 and 300 Win Mag and 300WSM.
If Germany had been more successful it could well have been 8mm and if the UK had been less limp wristed about arms development it could've been 303.
So there ya go.
In fact I think 303 will do the same job just as well any day of the week using up to 15k psi less in chamber pressure and up to 15gr less of powder.
That's why the Enfield is a less sophisticated rifle.....because it doesn't need to be.

Hello Kombi 1976, what kind of scope base is that on your 303/25? It does not look like one I've ever seen? I guess it's your Kangaroo gun? Anyone for a Kangaroo defence thread? :D
Damn right it's my roo rifle! :)
I could say that the roos don't like it but that would be inaccurate......
They never know what hit them!! :D
The scope base is a Lynx scope base that uses Hillver rings.
Lynx are a Sth African mob but I think their kit is made in Japan.
Damn nice stuff though.
I would really love one of their 3P 1.25-4.5x26D scope for a big game rifle.

I am not planning to but My Parker-Hale conversion is my ever reliable backup. If I have a problem with the rifle I am hunting with the old .303 will come out.
