M40 Family - Who owns one?

I would go with the Weaver T10 if you are looking to do another period type rifle. I have the MST100 but it was an impulse buy. I do like it but I don't know that I'd buy it again. If someone were willing to give me what I paid for it, I'd be very tempted to go to a Weaver as a replacement. The MST is nice, its very clear and the range adjustment so far is pretty much dead on matching the USMC dope chart to ammo so its pretty much idiot proof that way. But its expensive for what you get. That being said, maybe I should get a Weaver and compare usability before I shoot my mouth off! Would be a good excuse to do a cheapo earlier M40 type rifle, I'd probably go the same route with a 700 SPS again, see if I could find a wood stock, maybe trim the barrel down to 24".....

The MST-100 has the ease of use, after all it was made to be used by Crayon Eating Marines :d

The Weaver T10 are nice scopes. Not as clear as the MST-100 in my opinion and are more inclined toward the precision shooters at the time. It does have an adjustable parallax on the bell so you have to take that into account when shooting at various distances to make sure your parallax is correct.

Here is Carlos Hatchcock sitting with his M40A1 rifle sporting a Weaver T-10:

The other scope to use for a "period correct" build would be the Redfield 3-9 that was found on the M40 series of rifles. A couple of them originally found their way onto M40A1 rifles during the transitional period. See picture below.

So I had to go to the ranch today so my father and I could put down one of the horses. It was really hard since he was one of the friendliest horses we ever had. But old age and serious health failure meant it was time.

Dad suggested that we go out behind the ranch and do a little shooting to relieve the stress of it. I'm glad for the suggestion because it really helped us to relax.

We did some shooting at a steel plate at 500 yards. This was the first time my dad has shot past 100 yards. His first shot went just over the target so we dialed his scope down a bit and he put his next two shots right on the plate. In fact his two shots were only 2-1/2" apart.

I stepped up and put 5 shots on plate one after the other. My group measured a crappy 4-1/2" I'm sorry to say. My excuse though is I was using 40 year old technology and a straight 10x scope :p

Isn't a 4.5" group at 500 yds considered good with this scope? I think I remember you were one of the folks telling me that's acceptable a couple weeks ago.......

I need to get back out shooting, found a bunch of 1/2" and 3/4" imbed plates at the shop recently so I cut the studs off them and used my new mag drill to punch some holes in them to hang em. Now I just have to get out and set up my new range. Got enough plates to do one every 100 yrds out to 800. They aren't hi test target steel, but the price was right.

It is good, he’s being modest. Under moa from a field position is good to go.

I know, my comment was MY poor attempt.....to hide my envy. Keep flaunting that rifle haha! Very nice. Cool pics too. I have nothing new, just been busy with work. My oldest son/shooting partner being gone is hard on me, he kept the fire lit to go to the range. My younger son and I are going to burn some powder this weekend though, and I have a new project planned for him. Might put the HTG stock toward a .223 for him when it comes, he is outgrowing the Savage Rascal I got him last fall. tlovell's .223 McMillan a couple pages back got me thinking....

The M40 knock off is 1 step closer as of yesterday...

Thanks AG,,, the stock was made by MCR out of Calgary... A little bit of over kill,,, but it has long range built into it...

The Barrel is a Bob Jury Palma heavy contour,,, PT&G bolt,,, Jewel target trigger...

I stretched the legs on it 2 weeks ago at 1450 yards on a 12" gong,,, the first day was Zero hit out of 50 shots,,, the next day I crushed the numbers and got onto it in 7 shots,,, then I got 3 more hits on the next set of 10...

A good old 308 loaded hot with 43.5gr of Varget with 178gr A-Max's,,,

12" gong at 1450 yards is not to be seen with the naked eye...

Good thing I had the 24 power glass...

Its the small gong on the Left that barely shows up. LOL

Good thing there was a 11 mpr tail wind pushing the booti up there... A slight side wind of 4.75 MOA to play the game...

Yuppers,,, the plan is to sort this rig and wait for another 3 weeks to get my other copy cat M 40 A1 rocking...

It will be based on the Winchester Model 70,,, but I have to do it in a Remington classy...

Contour 3 mid weigth barrel for this project...
More to follow on this build since its a cartridge that never took off in North America...

Let's call it the suprize build to bring more shooters onto this awesome thread...

Cheers from Western Canada...

Let the good times roll,,, did I mention that I'm planning on 3 builds for the 2019 year... LOL

Jeez I wouldn't even be able to see that gong with my fixed 10 power :p

Not sure how long I'll move the M40A1 out to this weekend. I don't really have a rangefinder due to the store taking a week longer to even get it into the mail than they swore it would take. So any distance I try for will be sort of guessing and whatever my really old bushnell rangefinder might eek out a reading.

500 yards was actually too easy. I can do cold bore hits at 500 now. Thus why I want to start moving out farther.

My only limitation will be the scope on the rifle.

It's not so much as the rifle, optic, and ammo as its really part of getting them planted,,, today was Anschutz rail adapter to Henry remple block so the rifle can sit solid on the bypod.

Having the CNC machine makes it way to easy.

She's going to be tough going up in the North to see the 1450 gong now that the forest fire season is underway...

But that's part of the challange in the shooting sports...

I can't wait to pick up my Fake M40 1A to see how it compares to the A2,,, my guess is that they will run neck and neck to the small gong,,, this new number II build should be capable of stretching out further I'm sure,,, bigger case and smaller booltiz...

Cheers from the North / West.
