M40 Family - Who owns one?

After looking at them again I think I'll go with the 2/3 IPSC sized target. The hostage torso is still well over MOA for the distances I'll be shooting so that is fine. I don't really need the extra couple inches for the extra hundred dollars or so it would cost.

After taxes and with the free shipping I'd be looking at $310 to my door it looks like.
 
So, after awhile of not posting here, my build is with the gunsmith. The smith's done his homework in terms of clip slotting the receiver and machining the rear of the action to accept the optical base. Plus all the other stuff based in the info I have found and from conversations I have had with PWS guys from the states.

I'm super stoked to have this baby on the go, I haven't found a source for an M24 trigger but there is a gent willing to sell me the next best thing, an 40X trigger with Allen head adjustment. It'll be replaced when friends in the states source me what I need.

Other than that, I need rings and an MST.

The MST being the pipe dream.

Have a proper sling coming from Australia so, all in all, very happy.

Another beauty about to be born :D

Winds were hitting 50-60 km/h today so I didn't get to go out. Maybe they will be down to 25 km/h tomorrow so I'll go out.

I like 9 power,,, but I love 12 to 14 power more,,, so long as the optic has a extra wide field of view on 3 power for my bush hunting...

My vision is not as good as it once was. Ha
 
Anyone received photos of that one yet? I noted the low post count and poor vernacular (WTF is a “h40a1 spacer”?). It could be okay once seen I suppose.

The spacer the poster is talking about I would assume is the recoil pad spacers like I have on mine.

That’s what I thought was strange lingo as an issue M40A1 doesn’t use that McMillan spacer system. A purchaser can option it on any stock mind you, but it’s not on issue guns other than the M40A3/A5 series.

Never mind me, like I’ve said before OCD is a cruel mistress.
 
I called ATRS and asked them to order me a new one from McMillan. Got tired of waiting for a used one to fall into my lap haha. I ordered the HTG because I wanted the grip panels, but other than that I ordered it as an M40a1 stock.
 
Should add, now I need to find someone to slick up my action and put a proper barrel on it for me.

That being said, the Franken-40 I've got cobbled together now is pretty nice, maybe I should leave it alone and start with a different action when my stock comes in. Although I probably don't really need another rifle, this one is bleeding me dry quite nicely.
 
So after clearing the geese off the range (the bastards even were hissing at me when I was putting up targets) I had a great time at the range.

About scopes, Weaver T Series, or the US Optics BFX 10?

I read a few early M40A1 had the Weaver T10. Less expensive alternative and easier to find than the MST 100. 1 inch tube would be easier to mount on a Leupold Standard base. Would give the look of the older M40A1.

Or

The US Optics BFX10 more expensive, but also fixed 10x. Is it the modern version of a MST? 34mm tube, easier to mount on a pic rail from my search. Buy once cry once?

Right now I have my Vortex 3x9 Diamondback tactical. It's another option I guess. It's only a clone and I've strayed a bit from the traditional look already, and found a HTG stock in Woodland camo. The rifle is chambered in .223.

I got a call from a youtube "celebrity" (whom I cannot name at this time) who told me that I should hold onto the rifle and that if I really wanted to sell it they would buy it from me. As stands my rifle MAY be going down to the US temporarily for this person to use in a video.

As for your rifle it is looking pretty good. The original M40A1 rifles did have Weaver T10 scopes before the Unertl Scopes were ready. There is actually a picture of Carlos Hathcock holding an M40A1 with a T10 during the first Scout Sniper course.

The USMC changed to the Schmidt and Bender PMII 3-12x50 LP but those are pretty expensive scopes like the MST-100. Some snipers purchased SWFA 10x scopes for their rifles. These were on the M40A3 rifles.

Personally if you don't want to spend the $4000 for the MST-100 then get something that will suit your needs and allow you to shoot. There are many times I wish I had more than 10x magnification but I love the scope.
 
I would go with the Weaver T10 if you are looking to do another period type rifle. I have the MST100 but it was an impulse buy. I do like it but I don't know that I'd buy it again. If someone were willing to give me what I paid for it, I'd be very tempted to go to a Weaver as a replacement. The MST is nice, its very clear and the range adjustment so far is pretty much dead on matching the USMC dope chart to ammo so its pretty much idiot proof that way. But its expensive for what you get. That being said, maybe I should get a Weaver and compare usability before I shoot my mouth off! Would be a good excuse to do a cheapo earlier M40 type rifle, I'd probably go the same route with a 700 SPS again, see if I could find a wood stock, maybe trim the barrel down to 24".....
