DAMN...I need to get out west EVERY year. This every OTHER year thing sucks.
Good to hear the numbers are there, we struggled last spring on our longest scheduled trip ever. Probably shot 100-150 a day vs. the nearly countless #s the trip before. We only stopped when we were simply too tired to carry on, not because we ran out of targets. lol That said, we found that sometimes...they'd be out in numbers fairly late in the day..but not normally. Made it easy to pack it up, and wonder how cold we could get the beer when we got back. lol
As for overkill=hardly. lol I prefer 22LR for gophers when there are big #s. I love the opportunity to get good with my favorite caliber, and a gun I love. I make my own 22LR hollow points...so the effect can be very HMR like. Exceedingly rare to get a crawler, they go down hard when hit with my modified CCI Blazer. You can hear the loud "slap" sound from quite some distance too, even in the wind. They fold, about 1/4 of the time there are flying parts. I've shot lots with 12ga target loads on every trip too, but have also taken out gophers using 17HMR, .223, .308, 6.5 Creedmoor and 45/70. One can't be too careful when there are charging gophers. lol They're the ultimate, reactive target. Most spectacular hits were with the .223 using 55gr. V-Max hand loads. Talk about air time..and nothing but furry goo hits the ground.
Same with groundhogs, though where I hunt them...there is a .275" caliber restriction. I've shot them with 17HMR, 22WMR, 17 Hornet, 204R, .223, .243, .270, 20ga and 12ga. I've seen .223 literally cut them in half, I've seen .243 hits where you had to search for the wounds. Depends on the bullets, distance, where the bullet makes contact, etc. Just sold my .223, and am running my 17 Hornet again this year. So effective, zero recoil, low report, etc. Greatest distance so far 198 yards, and it dropped on the spot. Instant sleeping pill. Still, a busy day on those can be 4-5 groundhogs. My nephew and I have shot close to 1,000 gophers in a single day. Love it all...but this time of year, I wish I had shares in WestJet.
