Savage Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 1 stock wood

I recently picked this up on the EE. Appears to be stock parts from 4 different rifles, and all the wood is different in colour.
The lower forestock is a reddish colour and I was wondering what kind of wood it might be. Would like to try and get may hands on a buttstock and upper hand guards that a closer match than what I have. It's not in the best shape but I think I'll have more luck trying to match the upper to the lower than vice versa. rubbed it down with some steel wool and gave it a coat of linseed oil. There's a broken piece in the back (I have the piece for it and will repair) but it shows the raw wood colour.
I'd like it to look like it somewhat matches and get it set up to shoot nicely. Not worried about it not being a collector piece.

My guess is that you have a birch lower, the North America number 4’s were stocked in walnut (more brown) and Birch while British ones were typically stocked in beech and walnut. How much do the pieces of wood differ in color?
 
Sadly, that forend has seen better days. I've never seen anything in that colour before either.

It has the Ishapore screw hole and the draws and rear area are in pretty tough shape.

Wonder if you can return it?

I was going to say I hope all of that damage was disclosed. However if you got a good deal on it you might be able to buy a full stock set and just replace all the wood. I wouldnt spend too much on wood to match the lower though as it is in rougher shape
 
Thanks for the input. No I did not know the condition of the inside of the stock before I picked it up.
I doubt I can return it. As I said I gave the lower stock a rub down with steel wool and gave it some linseed oil, so maybe if I'd left it I might have some grounds but in this case I think I'll just have to eat it.. That broken piece literally fell off when I disassembled it, and it's missing the action screw bushing.
First lee enfield, and the lesson I guess is know what you are buying.

Don’t feel too bad, I bought and sold 5 No.4 Mk.1 before I found one I was happy with and learned something new each time. If you paid under $650 for it you could probably replace all of the wood and be okay. If the action bushing you are talking about is that steel tube that goes in the front action screw hole be really careful when tightening that screw down. If you tighten it too much without the bushing you can split the wood
 
Pretty much 650 is what I'm in to it. I traded for a Mosin plus 300 (plus I had to ship the Mosin). Worst case I'll have to see about replacing that lower stock. Any thoughts on where to find one?

You can try the EE, but quality varies...

The only other option is buying reproduction wood - and that'll run you over $300, plus shipping for the full set.

But..., that does look like a Mk.II stock (is the rifle a Mk.II?). If it is indeed a Mk.II rifle, you can buy refurbished forend from Numrich.

It's a Mk1*.
Is the stock different? I'll order one if it's the same.
Wood looks like it's off 4 different rifles, lol. If I can make a MkII stock work, then I'm fine with that.
 
OK, I'm ordering the stock from Numrich. Thanks for the tip. Looks like it'll be better than the stock I have. Besides the one I have looks like a MkII anyway

I went ahead and ordered the No2 stock. I realize it's not quite right but looking online it seems it will work on an No 1. its only 32 bucks vs 199, so worth a try. If it's wrong I'm sure I can sell in on the EE to recover that small purchase price. Picked up some other stuff at the same time for my M48 so thanks for pointing me there anyway.
Anyway if I can up with something that shoots and doesn't look like crap, then I can live with it. On the up side the bore is great.
 
That’s one of the most important things on a No.4 some of them have very worn bores. If I am not mistaken No.4 Mk.2 stocks are a little different from the Mk.1 but should work. Whatever you do make sure to try and replace that bushing as you can break the stock a lot easier without it
 
Thanks, I'll check it out.
Looking at a few options I found this that a guy did to make a MkII stock look like a Mk I. Think I might try it. I'll be looking for a beat up sporter forestock with the brace intact to use as a reference and steal the brace if anyone has one they can part with. Posted on the EE too.
