Zeroing a Lee Precision Scale - is it even possible?

The title reflects my frustration in trying to get this scale to zero, I've had it for (2) days (bought 2nd hand, I know! I know!) it came with the box and instructions which I have followed diligently a multitude of times with no success.

In desperation I moved the little ball from '0' to '10' and lo and behold the scale 'zeroed' i.e. bar balanced at the zero mark.

SO then I had the bright idea I would dispense powder into the scale tray from my powder flask, it has a 24 grain charging spout after which I moved the little ball to 30 grains and added 4 more grains to the slider - did not quite hit the mark so I adjusted the slider to 4.5 grains and scale hit the mark i.e. 34.5 minus 10 = 24.5

Which means it works but I'm not sure why or how, I moved the brass knurled knob back and forth when trying to zero it originally but did not help. I'm thinking that maybe the tray/hook assembly is the wrong one or too heavy. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks, Retreever

I have been using the Lee scale for almost 40 years now and have never had a problem. Mind you, I bought it new (when it still had the blade instead of the ball) and used it exactly per the instructions.

I would suggest that you contact Lee and tell your problem to them. They are very helpful and if they can't identify your problem over the phone or email then they will be able to eliminate what it could be.

If you are lucky you will get to talk to Peter in Customer Service. Great to deal with and Very helpful.

Two friends both started with the LEE scale, and after more frustration than they considered acceptable, one use a 10lb sledgehammer to adjust his scale, and the other used a 12 gauge. Now they both have scales that are much less frustrating to use.

No problem zeroing mine. Mechanically they are a very simple device and physics doesn't lie. If the pivot isn't damaged, they should work accurately forever.

Are you sure you've got the scale seated on the knife edge? Its easy to get a false seating, ask me how I know... Otherwise, if the ball bearing is the wrong size, theres gonna be trouble....

clean the blade and it's seat. there are two magnets to dampen the movement. keep the bar centered between them. it you are willing to figure it out , they work fine.

Download the instructions from Lee and follow them.
That is not a scale to boast about, but unless it's damaged, it should be as accurate as scales 10 x the cost.

Hey TrollGRG, I emailed Lee and got a response from Peter - he had some suggestions which I will try and I am supposed to get back to him if they do not work.

I confirmed scale pivot point is as it should with 'razor' seated in the 'v' notch. Thanks for the info.

Still working on it 1-trident-1 , have a support case logged with Lee and they just got back to me with some suggestions.

Hi All, well I finally figured out what the problem was , or I should say Peter at Lee did - I sent him a video of my efforts to zero the scale and he spotted the problem right off. The pan is not from Lee and apparently these units will only zero with the pans they were shipped with - he can't even send me a replacement pan. He offer to 'repair' it if I would ship it back but it would cost me more than a new one most likely. So it's off to Amazon I go!
