It's a military spec heavy barrel, pretty much designed for whatever you want to put through it. I have one and have shot steel which hasn't phased it at all. Is steel shot the best bear medicine though? I would use a slug suited for bear such as brenneke.

Steel shot is 100% fine in any 590A1
Load it with slugs, leave the shot at home.

No, nothing. But I rather like the thought of not having to critically aim the first shot with a slug (nerves). But the follow up, yes a slug is best. And the first steel shot round would have a "slowing effect" on the animal.
