Is using steel shot ok for the barrel in the 590A1? Just asking for bear protection for a trip this weekend to the mountains. I'll be carrying the 590A1. Any info is appreciated.

It's a military spec heavy barrel, pretty much designed for whatever you want to put through it. I have one and have shot steel which hasn't phased it at all. Is steel shot the best bear medicine though? I would use a slug suited for bear such as brenneke.

Thanks! Yeah, I'll alternate between the steel shot and slugs in the tube.

Love to hear this story! I've always packed slugs... did something happen?

No, nothing. But I rather like the thought of not having to critically aim the first shot with a slug (nerves). But the follow up, yes a slug is best. And the first steel shot round would have a "slowing effect" on the animal.

If you’ve surprised a bear up close or have got a predatory animal within your “it’s time to shoot zone” you probably want to kill it quick and are likely only going to get one good shot off, sticking to slugs would be the smart choice but it’s your health and welfare and not mine lol.

I dont have personal defense experience against a charing bear but you can see on youtube, some americans on a canoe drifting on a narrow river were looking at some grizzly cubs and when the mom appeared it took litterally 1.5 second for her to be in the boat, so I guess you do want a first kill shot to stay alive.

Thanks! I kind of thought so. But I haven't taken that shotgun out of the safe in a couple of years. Just making sure.

Leave the shotgun in the safe then, you’ll be better of with a rifle in a .30 cal you are confident in shooting than a shotgun you haven’t shot in years or feel you’re nerves will get the best of you on an unfamiliar gun. When was the last time you patterned it or zeroed it for slugs at set distances?

If your 590a1 has ghost rings it’s pretty hard to miss with slugs. Maybe practice more at the range so you don’t have “nerves”?

OK, thanks for the answer on the question. The other opinions are noted.

End of thread.

Again...end of thread.
