Morning gunntuz

I just bought a Magpul MOE forend for my 870 and I noticed she’s a little slippery when operating. I’m heading down to the gun shop this today to pick up either the MLok AFG or the Hand stop (if the hand stop is MLok)

Just curious as to what you guys recommend, what’s more comfortable. They are both similar in price. My guns get a lot of use.. probably on average five times per week I’m out back blasting away. Especially the 870P so it needs to stand up.

Thanks in advance

I hate the magpul forend for that reason. It's hard, cold, and slippery. And to be honest, it's butt ugly. I find the hogue overmolded forend to be far superior because it feels sticky and you get a real good grip. I run magpul buttstocks and hogue forends on all my 870's

Yeah I originally wanted a Hogue forend. Couldn’t find one aside from an olive coloured one on Amazon for like 70 bucks plus shipping. Saw the MOE at Williams and just bought it.

Its not mine, but this is the end result I am aiming for.

I know some people use specialized tools to to their stippling but a lot just use a soldering iron and a lot of patience :p If you go this road, practice on a pmag first then move on to the bigger piece.

That is something I was considering as well. Not sure how many rainfalls it would stand up though.

If you clean off oils and any dirt or grime before you apply the grip tape it will stay put long after the grip has worn off, rain won’t affect it. The grip tape on my on polymer pistol has lasted even with some solvent contact from cleaning the frame, if you do a full strip and clean on your shotgun just keep it off the forend and it will last.

Clean it with windex and then isopropyl alcohol a couple times and degrease it well.

Alright update.. tried the Mlok AFG... SUCKED. Can’t grip the actual forend so I naturally try to hang on to the AFG but it’s too small. Tried putting my index finger forward of that little forward bump thing. One 3” slug told me that does not work. Exchanged it for an MVG. Not bad but feels unatural. I’m going to pick up some grip tape.

I tried a hand stop on my Rem 870's MOE forend and found what you did with the AFG, no positive grip, and slipping. I tried it without as well but slid into the flashlight mount a few times and ended up installing a vertical grip, which is what I found the best for the 12.5" barrel Rem 870 when using slugs or 3" 00. I have vertical grips on my AR's so it wasn't an adjustment to fire a shotgun with one on it (just substantially more kick). I put grip tape on the MOE forend I have on my Moss 500 (no light mount on it) and found that to be a good solution as well. I have a spare MOE forend and might try stippling it.

I agree. The M-Lok AFG has terrible ergonomics. Try the AFG-2. Fits so well compared to the former that the difference is night and day for me. You will need to buy the M-Lok adapter for it however, as it only mounts to a Picatinny rail.

Also, I've read that using vertical grips can result in bent rods over time. Something about pulling down instead of straight back. I know back when I had a vertical grip on my 870 I found it kind of awkward to pump, which caused cycling issues.

Try using the vertical grip as a hand stop and it’s a much different experience, put your hand in front of it while gripping the forend. The short magpul vertical grip works well when used like this, you can half grip the vertical grip and forend at the same time.

AFGs work great when you don't have to action your hand (stationary), but I tend to dislike them on pumps. Shotguns, or even a rifle (PAR). Find you get a weird break in your grip. If you find yourself losing traction, then I'd opt for some grip tape in the cutouts...or reexamine how you're holding and racking. Lol

Hi
I tried to send you a message but your mail box full. Can you please check.

Be aware than not all skateboard tape is created equal, and most of it is probably far too rough to have it rubbing against bare skin for any length of time. I'd try to find one of the more rubberized varieties.
