Any love for High Standard?

I had one years ago. Nice looking little pistol but it was horrible for jamming. I had several mags and it didn't matter which one or what ammo I was using. Ended up selling it and buying a Ruger MKII and never looked back.

The High Standard was the class act in the 50s and 60s for serious competitive shooters. My father shot one in the Olympics. We have those guns, a couple of barrels, and his shooting boxes 'from the back in the day'.

I have an old HS "The Marshall" 9 shot revolver (why 9? Who knows) Solid little revolver and pretty accurate. Fun range toy.

I have two; one I bought back in the 70's; a Sport King with with a socket-head cap screw that fastens the barrel to the frame; in satin chrome finish. The second one i bought less than a month ago, it is a Sharpshooter M target pistol; it is like new, and is deadly accurate; high polished blued finish with dark walnut grips, and gold highlights in the engraving; beautiful gun!!. I am fortunate that both magazines are the same style. We are doing more target shooting, and I wanted to upgrade; I handled and tried almost everything that was available for under $1000.00; I bought the used HS for half that and like it better than everything else I tried.

Both have amazing triggers.

Word of caution; when removing the right side grip, do so in a plastic bag. The grip holds the slide release leaver in place, and has a tiny little coil return spring that you will lose. These can be bought on line, however having lost the one from my first pistol, and finding that it was missing from the second, I discovered that the spring plunger pins that hold the straps on to a dollar store watch have springs the right diameter, and just need to be cut to length before installing.

A High Standard was the first pistol I ever shot, back in the early 1970s. I was still young back then. Although I'm not much of a handgun shooter, I've had three High Standards and currently have a Tournament model. As noted above, they were among the best .22 semi auto pistols made in the USA. After the factory moved to New Hartford, Connecticut, from Hamden, and company financial difficulties, quality began to decline, although there are many, many very fine New Hartford guns. The triggers are exceptional. Original magazines usually work best.

High Standard "gurus" on Rimfire Central, are quick to remind shooters to avoid high velocity ammo in HS pistols and stick to standard velocity. They say using SV ammo will help minimize the risk of frame cracking. These same gurus also remind HS users to replace the recoil spring if the pistol has seen much use, which they say occurs after ten to fifteen thousand rounds -- or when the spring has lost 10% of its strength. No doubt there are plenty of shooters who have experienced no problems with HV ammo and have never replaced a recoil spring. I'm just passing along the advice.

They were a "Standard" in our pistol club. Had a Supermatic Military myself. First 22 target I bought. Sport king is a lighter balance in the front. not as nice for serious target use compared to later heavy barreled guns.

I had the same problem using the low velocity ammo.
Got away from them and things began to take shape.

I have "The Victor", made in Hamden. Great gun. Rarely a problem. Never dry fire one though, as it will damage the entry to the chamber.

My current High Standard, a Model 107 Tournament

This looks almost identical to my Sharpshooter except for the over-travel trigger stop (mine does not have one) and the two little cuts for the compensator at the end of your barrel.

Very nice pistol!

This thing spent a lot of years as a barn gun, loaded with .22 shotshells for picking off mice without damaging the barnboards, back when such a thing was legal.

I have a Supermatic Trophy and it is a pleasure to shoot. I got some magazines directly from High Standard. They work really well.
