Mosin-Nagant Newbie Issues

Hey Guys,

It seems that there's a lot of really nice Mosin-Nagants for sale in the Equipment Exchange forum -- I've not visited in a while -- has there ever been a shortage of nice Mosin-Nagants? Sheesh!

Anyway, I like to hunt with my milsurps (Lee-Enfield something or other, Grandpa bubba'd it; Mauser K98 Yugo) and I've just converted my two brothers-in-law to muley hunting. Plus, they're pumped about using milsurps too. The one would go for a Mosin-Nagant for sure (plays the Russians in Axis & Allies), the other has more money and I'm gonna try to get him to buy a Garand from P&P or something.

So the question:
Can you put a normal eye-relief scope on a Mosin-Nagant without committing a sin against milsurps?
The brother-in-law apparently wants a scope (we don't do much bush-hunting -- mostly wide open spaces in southeastern Alberta), and I don't know what kind of butchering would have to be done in order to mount one on a Mosin-Nagant. I h'aint ne'er handled one before. I do know that Iron Elite has a nice cantilever mount for K98s that won't wreck the rifle, but is there a need -- let alone a source -- for something similar on Mosin-Nagants?

A second question: assuming that the only way to mount a (non-scout type) scope on a Mosin-Nagant is to do horrible things to an otherwise perfectly good rifle, which model would be the least valuable, and thus the least painful to bubba-ize? Some post-war, I dunno, Chinese copy or something? I obviously have no clue. And I can't believe I'm even asking this. Please forgive me.

If you plan to bubba it, look for an import marked M91/30 with a nice bore.

The only alternatives for scoping involve drilling and tapping the receiver if you don't use a scout type mount.

Check out a PE scope mount on fleabay. Probably the least bubba-ey way to scope a mosin(if you plan on chucking a modern scope in it).

Drilling a classic milsurp is nothing less than sacrilege !

Here's my M44.

Steiner, the 26mm rings work well with a one inch tube, all that's needed is a shim. Once around with electrical tape works fine.

Thanks for the tips guys. Spencer, nice unissued Polish M44 I assume. :)
I have two of these. Beautiful, accurate, and cheap back in the day. Definitely one of those 'best buys' in life. Wish I was more into bolt milsurps back in the 80's and stocked up on all those.

Amandil - this forum will have lots of discussion and pics of different mount options. Many threads on the topic.

Unissued Polish M44 it is:) I have a few rifles but this is my favourite bolt action, I bought it about a year ago at a gun show. I was overwhelmed with the quality and the dinky character of the thing, I just had to have it. It was there all weekend and nobody bought it, seems everyone in this neck of the woods goes for the boil in the bag type rifles. The scope made a big difference to group size, and reloads made it even more accurate.

My favourite recipe...... Pulled 125 grn czech 7.62 X 39 boat tailed bullets and 56 grns of BL-C ( 2). Not for women. Try it:rockOn:

I have the same rifle (sans scope) and I loaded the same recipe 2 nights ago .... can't wait to see the fireball from these

Craig, I doubt you will see the fireball youself, least I can't when using a scope. If you have a crowd around you you will notice that they back away a bit sharpish, they think it's going to blow up. Let us know how you find them, and remember it's only women that need shoulder padding. : )

Russians never wore T-shirts in the winter wars vs the Germans, and the Vinter great coats they wore are heavily padded in the shoulders.

I duplicate this by simply folding a rag, or small towel until it makes approx 1" of padding, and I can drape it over my shoulder. :D

The metal but stock a Mosin has is meant to protect the rifle, and also deliver a crushing blow in a butt strike to a German helmet.

Thanks again guys, this is great stuff! The one brother in law wants to do it up like Vasily Saitzev (sp!) in Enemy at the Gates. This is a good sign, I think.

Sadly, it sounds like the other brother in law doesn't want a milsurp. Some new lame-ass spanky rifle, probably. Damn. I guess I'll have to cough up the cash and get the Garand myself. I did get a raise this month...Hmmmm!

All that I ask in return is if you find a nice mosin sniper repo for a good price let me know :) i don't want to destroy my mosin...

I don't have a scope and I saw the fireball very well :D

No one close enough to me while firing this time, got a few compliments though on the rifle.

I never use padding .... but I don't bang off a ton of ammo either ;)

The BL-C2 load hits pretty much to POA at 50yds, I'll have to try a few more next time at 100 yds.
