Has the SKS become the Canadian shooter's equivalent of the Ford 150?

Its a good gun, not a great gun

But at $200 its literately disposable!!!!

I have 3 kids. its their PAL graduation present. so far i have give out 1.

its the gun that sits on the front of ATV and i don't care if it gets scratched up.
never notice a "safe kiss"

like said above its a SHTF hero.

I see them as complimentary to a safe full of >$1,000 guns

This is your beater, knock it around, lend it out, bury in a filed!

I agree that the SKS is the Enfield sporter of our day - cheap, plentiful, reliable!

I think a lot of people try to justify the thousands they've spent on firearms by brushing off the SKS as poor quality simply because it is inexpensive. There are a lot of firearms out there which are much more expensive but have many more plastic/MIM parts, failures, jamming issues, and accuracy problems. When you buy an SKS you know what you're getting - a rugged firearm which will put rounds downrange every time the trigger is pulled with minimal maintenance and acceptable accuracy, similar to a sporterized Lee Enfield.

There is a lot of machining involved in creating an SKS and it is a solid piece of blued metal and wood - this would be much more than $300 to produce these days. The low costs are certainly due to the extensive supply on the Canadian market these days and may not last forever.

Lots of people have repeatedly compared the Lee-Enfield to the SKS - in terms of popularity and affordability. However their is a big difference.

Brand new SKS rifles are selling right along side surplus rifles - often at the same or similar prices. With the exception of AIA guns - in 7.62X29 and .308 - BRAND NEW, current production Lee-Enfield rifles were never produced and sold to the public. Now if Norinco decided to bring out a no.4 or no. 5 clone in 303 British that would be interesting. There is a separate thread on that.

BTW you can buy new and used Ford F150s too - just not new and used L-Es

MY favourite SKS throws expended casings perfectly up in the air arching to the exact spacing of 4-5 seats to the right so that hot brass/steel rains down on the person sitting there on top of their head....

Its not that the rifle is the most accurate I own its that it has a sick sadistic sense of humour which gets abnoxiously funny after the 5th and 20th round popped up in the air only to fall exactly in the same spot again and again..... makes me laugh and howl every time lol....ya the rifle is a jerk

Hahahaha, best post of the day!

Go to a gun show. Go to a gun shop. Go hunting. There are SKS rifles everywhere. Accessories galore. People buy them even if they don't need them. Is this the Canadian shooting community's equivalent of the Ford F150?

Mine is just a novelty. A very fun novelty. LOL

I’m sure the F-150 has a greater breakdown rate...

I’m going to go on a rant here... full size trucks are the biggest waste of money for most buyers. Yes, the cost is logical if you actually use it like a truck was intended. Thats cool. Unfortunately more than half of truck buyers use it like a daily driver... and are convinced they “need” it and sink down the deep hole of fuel costs and rampant depreciation for capabilities they hardly use. I see it day-in and day-out.

If most consumers were logical and need a truck once-in-a-while it’s best to buy a cheap used truck and plate it when needed... the “big three” make big bucks on trucks so they will continue to push sales, sink some more customers, and carry on. I see people everyday scared to death of being off warranty and spend $30,000 to $40,000 every 3-5 years to stay in warranty. There are no major mechanical repairs that will cost you that much money over the course of an extra 3 years after warranty expires (Diesel excluded) Spending money to save money is the dumbest thing I have ever seen.

Truck insurance in Ontario is cheaper than on cars. Also, it's hard to insure an old truck. Once you take the insurance off, it's hard to put it back on. The insurance company wants pictures of every inch of the body to make sure the truck was not involved in an accident.

#### yeah!
I drive a 2000 honda civic se 1.6l as a daily driver.
5 speed standard. I just rolled 400 km on 22 liters of fuel from my last fill up. That's booting around town too not highway  I'm doing all seals, water pump, timing, valves etc starting this Monday and new ignition system complete.

But my other vehicle is a piece of #### 2004 f150 with the god awful 5.4 triton. Cam phasers made of aluminum and wearing out, oil filter adapter seal (yeah great design on that...) oil lifters clogging in the valves, spark plugs spawling and snapping off in the garbage aluminum headers..... Plus average pickup fuel economy in real life bordering on 14 mpg combined they're an utter pain in the ass and pieces of absolute s**t these days.
The thing is I paid 3000 cash and fixed it myself. That's my approach. I always have a truck but I buy dirty old beaters and fix them, then kick the ####ing #### out of them for a couple years. I love having a pickup when you need one. I make money doing dump runs, going off road exploring with the kids, driving over trees and my kids like to throw rocks at it in the driveway for fun. I wash it once a year sometimes....

But 100% agree, most dudes buying 70 thousand dollar trucks drive them to the grocery store and back and couldnt flush a coolant system if their life depended on it lol
Driving around to Tim Hortons and the mall 24/7 burning 14mpg at a buck 30 a liter on top of 700 a month car payments for an unreliable piece of modern made #### pickup that wont make it past 200k km without major failures lol

we don't own guns because they're efficient but because we want to
