Anyone shoot 284?

My first deer rifle was a Remington 760 Gamemaster in 270 that my father bought for me one Christmas. First Deere I hit with it I #### through the neck, it dropped on the spot. I was very young at the time, but was always impressed with the accuracy and results of that cartridge. I was never a fan of the rifle, per se, but did like the cartridge. And there is something to be said for the ready availability of the cartridge. Just got 284 stuck in my head now though, Andy having a hard time getting it out. I have come across a Browning Micro Medallion in 284. Real light gun, around 6.5 lbs. A fellow I know has it. Anyone have any experience with the Micro Medallions?

I have a Micro 284win. My rifle isn't a tack driver but an honest 1.5" at a 100 yds, sometimes a little better. Maximum COL is 2.800" due to the magazine, you will not be able to exceed this length unless you feed cartridges by hand. The bolt is a 3 lug design allowing for a 60 degree bolt lift and the tang safety is handy. It has a 20" barrel, its a quick handling rifle, great for hunting heavy timbered areas and able to reach out to 300 yds if needed. I have a leupold 2-7 compact scope mounted on it. It's one of my favourite rifles for hunting blacktails on Vancouver Island. 120 GR TTSX would be a good bullet for this rifle. 139 gr hornady bullets also work well.

400m later, this morning, we found the Animal.

really happy with the 7mm08 to be honest!

RJ, I use 40gr of 'Varget' behind the 140gr Woodleigh, its pretty awesome bullet for the 7-08 from what ive experienced on some deer like this and hinds.. i shot a spike sambar yesterday evening near by to this deer actualy, it was shot infront of the shoulder anglin back a couple ribs and exited without fuss at 100m but shows good expansion typical to the woodleighs!

there leg bones are quite dense so even 30 cals smashing them can slow the projectiles right up, a TTSX will often catch in a Sambar, elasticity of the hide aids in the trapping of.

i missed rib in the big stag pictured, an there was no noticable THUD when the bullet hit, which is why it sailed on. :)

Hey, thanks for that info! I passed on the Micro Medallion at this time, it is near new, but he wants $1750 seems high to me. Anyone have any idea what is the most accurate commercially produced 284 out there?

The idea of building a 30-284, 338-284 or a 9.3-284 has been bouncing around in my head for the last few days. Has anyone thought of the same thing?

I picked up a Stevens short action as the basis. I'm trying to keep this thing as light as possible, so trying to find a good lightweight stock, or may end up using a junky Tupperware one because they are pretty light as it is. Also contemplating getting a light profile carbon fibre wrapped barrel to shave some more weight off, still undecided between 20 or 22 inches.

That's the idea I have in my head anyways, we shall see how it all ends up coming together!
 
Very cool. Keep us posted on your build Potshot21. One thing this thread has shown me, is how many people are into building their own rigs. I had no idea it was that common. I wouldn’t know where to start, lol. If I did do a build, while I need something light for my shot back, I couldn’t go with something plastic. Being a collector of old Winchesters, I just love to looks of a real good piece of wood too much.

Somewhere I have a Shooting Times article where they necked up and down the 284 case. I believe 358 was as large as they went though. Did the same thing with the 350 Rem Mag case too. - dan

I remember building that rifle. I owned it and a Leeper built M70 that RickF has back home again.

Both shot the same load way too well, but the M7 was 2 lbs lighter scoped and ready to go.

140gr TTSXs and H4350 were magik.
The. 284 is a great rig!
 
Anyone own / shoot one of the 70s Ruger 77s in 284? I have a 70s tang safety Ruger Light in 250 Savage. Love the little rifle. Accurate enough for me. Wondering how the Rugers shoot in 284. Might be a good fit for me if I can find I one.

I can't speak specifically to the .284's (I apologize if this isn't helpful) but my tang safety in 7x57 (similar cartridge) is a great shooter.

Nice rifle. 7x57 isn’t that easy to find in the early Rugers. Never really thought about the 7x57, might be an option for me if I can’t find a 284. Really like the early tang safety Rugers. Thanks for sharing that info.

I just picked up a 1976 dated Ruger 77 tang safety in 7x57. Thinking of trying something in the 140-150 gr range, though the Norma Oryx 156 gr looks interesting. What do you find works well in yours?
I also have another 77 tang safety in 284 coming. Had bought 6 boxes of factory ammo from a local fellow, and finally found the gun to go with it. Not sure which one will end up with me in the woods this Fall.

Both great cartridges, deciding which one to take would be a good problem to have. Good find on that 284 btw.
