Custom 270 Win. Showing some Promise

Pete, I can only imagine the velocity, probably knock off the pedals once it hits flesh or bone, leave a nice pencil size exit hole. My very first custom made rifle was a 257 Wby. with a 28" Ted Gaillard barrel (velocity of 3,705 fps). The one and only year I used a Barnes bullet (yes, the 100gr. ttsx), shot a whitetail buck and it ran well over 500 yards before dropping dead. Thank goodness for snow so that I could track the buck. Only remote microscopic specks of blood could be found. After gutting, only a pencil size entrance/exit wound. Never a Barnes bullet again!

The deer went 500 yards with a double lung shot?

I've shot a lot of Barnes through my 257 Wby. and while you're correct in saying they sometimes leave small exit holes and don't do as much internal damage as some other bullets, I've never failed to recover an animal that was hit properly.

A much bigger problem is using bullets that disintegrate on impact, like match bullets or often even Ballistic Tips and SST's, especially when pushed to high velocities as in a 257 wby.

This is typical performance for a Hornady 7mm 08 or .280...

I would expect a 150 grain Hornady in a .270 would perform similarly.

I'm with you on this one guntech. I have harvested lots of deer elk and moose with a 7x57 and 154 hornady bullets. I got similar performance.

I finally had some range time for velocity results. Velocity was quite consistent, however short of my goal. I fired 5 shots over the chrony, (good group) and averaged 3,259 fps. Load again is: 55 gr. Alliant #16, 130 gr. Accubond, 210M primer, Sako brass. If temperatures cool down this summer (no end in sight of the heat) I'll conduct load development to further my goal, otherwise this winter.

If your chrony is @ 10-12' from muzzle, add 10 fps to chrony speed for true MV. You could likely increase charge weight a couple grains before the primer blows out of the pocket

Shoots pretty nice as it sits now

You were bag-on with your calculations, that it would be about 3,260 fps. The chrony was set at 10 feet, as usual. It's jacked-up enough and will not try to increase velocity with this powder, I have the best of both worlds with the accuracy and velocity. If it cools off this summer, I will conduct loads using Alliant/Reloder #26 to further my objective.

Ive had similar fails with tsx and ttsx from 30 cal down to 22cal. Never used them in anything bigger than 300wm. All high velocity impacts
I was working up a load woth a 110gmx in my 300wm. Almost touched 3700fps 15' in front of muzzle. Ill continue in the fall with it

Best of luck with the 270

Funny stuff. The irony is, I have a fried in Africa right now who goes once or twice a year. He generally shoots two rifles, a 270 and a 375. He also has shot a boat load of different bullets but in the last few years uses Barnes exclusively. He just sent me a picture of the fifth Cape buffalo he’s taken this week. All shot with one shot, all down inside of 100 yds, more than half inside of 50. All with Barnes bullets.

Shoot stuff where it counts. I’m amazed at the amount of people that fringe shoot game and blame cartridges and bullets.

Last fall my father in law shot a bull elk at 340 yards with 300wm 180gr TTSX. Poor shot, a tad low. Broke the front leg on entry, smashed the sternum but didn't enter chest cavity, broke offside leg and exited. It dropped, bulldozed around a bit until he could get a second shot into it. A lot of bullets would likely of led to a long chase for a 3 legged elk

the year before he shot a 360" bull broadside with same rifle/load at 150 yards. It tore off on a 50 yard death sprint, the eye guards dug into the ground and it flipped right over. Bullet recovered on far side ribs

Best of luck with the 270.
Thanks, just need to find a big buck or bull.

I hunt mainly bow and muzzleloader for deer. You guys are lucky to be able to use centerfire rifles. Im more than a wee bit jealous. Rarely do i get north enough for centerfire season for deer. My 2506 sure drops em quick though
