The 7mm Mauser

That’s in great shape NAA!
My serial number 74-866xx
Dates to 1980.
I’m going to load up some Reloader 17 in the next few days.

In a 22" barrel on a modern action, 140s will usually make 2900+, 150s 2800, 160s 2700, and 175s 2600. I prefer Norma MRP
but there are many powders that work well. Lately, I have been playing with Reloder 17 with 140s, and it shows promise. Dave.

Not much to add to that, except to say I prefer medium burning powders for lighter bullets ( IMR 4350. W760), and slower powders for heavy bullets ( H4831)

Someone is bound to chime in with Bell using the mauser/275 rigby to shoot elephant during colonial ivory .....poaching. He used large 175gr military FMJ to body shoot Elephant for ivory. Let them die over days, recovering the ivory with the assistance of vultures. Not a example to be quoting, or a method anyone in Kanada would advocate.

Have you ever actually read any of his books?

My first 7x57 was a ruger 77 bought new in 1978. I shot the barrel out of it. It loved 154 hornadies and 4831. I have had a few since I let that one go. Bought a Remington classic in the year they came out. I think 1983? Sold it to eagleye in a crazy moment. It was very accurate with the middle weight bullets. Had a featherweight husky and sold it to why not? Why? I don't know. Lol . my current 7 Mauser is a Remington mountain rifle. Light ,swings like a dream and shoots where it's pointed. 7x57 is an overachiever. I have harvested many elk, deer bears and moose. All clean kills.

In the last two years I had two 7X57s built, this is the carbine. Both shoot well, and the only craptacular ammo I have run into was vintage Winchester 175grs, which was odd because vintage Kynoch 173-5s ran and shot quite well. I have been sticking with 139-140s for the most part, havent hit the reloading yet, but kept some european load data for the future. Out of current production 7X57 I find the Feds the worst, but everything except that old Winchester has been ok so far. In the last year I plowed through old dominion, PS, norma, lapua, sako, kynoch, gevelot, imperial, DWM, FN, RWS, Remmy, Winchester, Federal and Hornaday, all did ok (usually about 2inchs at 100m). I find it to be a very forgiving round out of a well made gun.

Ballistic twin of the 7.08. Believe the mauser has 1gr more water volume than the 7.08. The reputation is probably due to a nice range of projectile size in a low recoiling....thus accurate caliber. Excellent for the recoil shy such as women or youth.

There is a New Zealand game culler/guide/gunsmith, Nathan Foster. He has done a lot of game performance studies with many calibers. Believe his pet for the 7.08/x57 is the 150 Nosler partition and for a long range load, the 162 Amax. Not sure if the Amax is made any more, but Hornady's(?) Eldx would be close.

Mine is a M77 mkII. Have not developed a load for it yet. Hoping to work my wife up to it.

I thought Bell was a headshot guy? I'm sure I've read somewhere that he disected ones skull to know exactly where the brain sits...

7X57 Mauser is probably my favourite cartridge, next to .358 Win... it kills stuff cleanly, both big and small. I have had a couple dozen rifles over the years, but currently have an M77 Mark II and a No.1-A in 7X57... they are solid and nicely balanced rifles.

I have another 275 Rigby in the works.

Here's the project ....

It's going to be a long road ahead on this one. Currently in the "gathering" stage. Barrel enroute for 7x57 chambering.

What are the guns you had built? They Look interesting

The cartridge book, i have the others, but bog down on them.

What's your take. Personally, probably because i am near sighted, not much of a long range hunter. Probably two things, seeing um, and usually hunting in thick stuff.

You’ve picked the right man for the job! Excellent gunsmith

I really like 7mm cartridges. I'm not much of a magnum fan so I won't extol its praises.

However, I have several rifles chambered for different 7mm cartridges, including one wildcat I really like, the 7mmX39 which is a real performer with 120 gr bullets.

The others are ordinary, 7-08, 7x57 and 280rem.

The 7x57 could easily be the only rifle I would ever need.

I shoot 139 gr bullets over 56.0 grains of H414SL10 (slightly slower than W760/h414) at 2850fps out of a 1935 Brazilian Mauser with its original barrel cut back to 25 inches and a muzzle brake I made up for it.

This load exceeds everything in any manual I've seen by several grains. I will admit, IMHO it's to hot for 1895 Mausers and earlier models. This rifle shoots better than I can hold and with the brake, it's a pussycat to shoot.

OP, you will grow to really appreciate that rifle. Like Eagleye, I've shot everything from marmots to moose, to bears, deer, elk, coyotes and wolves with it.

I find it tough to beat the velocities I get out of that particular 7x57 with the 280rem. At least, that's what my magnetospeed tells me

I have a couple of rifles chambered in 7x57 but the one that I use the most is a 93 mauser sporter that I got from my father so many years ago. It has accounted for a lot of game. I have tried a lot of different ammo in it and what it likes best is the Winchester power points 145 g. The groups tighten up considerably when I shoot that. The problem is that I am almost out and have been unable to find any more for quite a while.
