I recently purchased a 20" stainless T/C Katahdin Prohunter barrel in 45-70 finally put some loads together for it this afternoon have 350gr cast WLNGC - 350gr JHP's and 350gr Swift A-Frames also put together some Cast Performance 460gr WLNGC's.

Yes its just a single shot and doesn't have a detachable magazine but it will put down anything with authority...

If you want “light”, there’s also the Ruger 77/44, stainless synthetic, mag fed and very handy (reminds me of a 10/22).

(OP's looking for "something compact and that has open sights or peeps").

Double yup. Had this one a spell, but the magazine weren't friendly to loads using 300+ gr cast boolits. Too dang short along with the fact that the action has no exposed cocking knob on the striker to enable the shooter to silently ####/de-#### the rifle when huntin'. Neat rifles though, none the less.:)
