I was thinking along similar lines for a light weight, iron sighted carbine that could tag along on canoe trips, and what I kept coming back to was a CZ-527 Carbine in 7.62X39 fitted with a NECG ghost ring, which I have for my .223 version, but seldom use. A CZ-527 Carbine checks many of the same boxes that the Ruger Gunsite Scout does, yet its lighter. While the 7.62X39 has neither the terminal performance or range of a .308, it has enough of both for the intended purpose, particularly when handloaded. Its leaps and bounds ahead of a carbine chambered for a pistol cartridge, and easily exceeds the range of a shotgun, I expect a CZ-527 in 7.62X39 could be counted on to take game out to 200 yards. The Winchester 94 in .30/30 is one of the nicest hunting rifles there is to carry, but traditional lever guns are not as easy to clean and maintain as a bolt action, and for use as a truck gun, they are slow to load and unload. One downside of the CZ is that spare magazines are expensive, but they are small and flat and ride easily in the pocket, something that cannot be said of the bulky magazines for Ruger's GSR.
