Any place in the GTA that lets you rent/borrow go/no go gauges for stag 10 build?

Really don’t want to spend ~$50 per gauge. How important is it to check headspace anyways? I have a IBI barrel and brownells bcg.

You "should" be fine, but 'should' isn't good enough IMO - so yes, headspace all builds.

Any local gunsmith would be able to check headspacing on a typical Stag10 setup being 308Win/7.62 NATO or 6.5 Creedmoor. Call around.

I take the opposite view.

1- Headspace is almost always within spec on AR-platform builds;
2- Even if it isn't you can't adjust it anyway;
3- The criticality of headspace is grossly exaggerated in most people's minds. Headspace would have to be excessive by multiple millimeters to be an actual safety hazard. The far more probable result is unreliable ignition and short case life if you reload. Not exactly unacceptable risks in a range gun.

So in the end, why bother? Put the gun together and shoot it. Worry about it only if problems develop.

Interesting view.. I might just have to do that because there’s only 2 gunsmiths within reasonable driving distance and both have long waitlists (12 months at one), even if it’s just to check headspace.

I second all this my friend!!!

Headspace issues in AR type firearms are not common. Remarkable considering that parts get mixed and matched from assorted makers, some of whose parts are inferior to others.
Cartridge cases fired in a rifle with excess headspace may well fail on the first reload.
How many manufacturers don't bother to check headspace on their rifles because there is no need to worry about it only if problems develop?

Im in a similar situation, just waiting for brownells titanium bcgs to come back in stock. We could split cost on renting them from tna if willing to wait and its .308

By the time you pay for shipping both ways it isn't worth it to rent gauges imo as you are at about half of the cost of a set or more. Plus, you may need them again one day to build another upper, complete rifle, or just swap barrels/bolts.

It was $90 to my door, all in, for a set of Clymer Go/No Go gauges from Brownells.

And, as for the guys saying you don't need to check headspace, don't listen to them as they may need a headspace check themselves lol. Trying to save $90 by skipping safety procedures, when a controlled explosion is going off inches from your face, is pretty ridiculous imo.

I just rented from True North Arms. $20 for the rental and $15iash to ship back. So $35ish for something I will literally never use again. For me it was a a no brainer

What about the shipping to you? Another $15? That's $50ish. For $40 more you could have owned a set. If you wanted, you could have sold the set on the EE for $100 shipped(the cheapest set in Canada is roughly $150 to your door) and you would have basically checked your headspace for free.

I'm not trying to say your route didn't work(it was fairly cost effective), I just wanted to give the OP and others something to think about.

Anyone wanting to toss $20 rental fee my way, I have a set located in Mississauga. I bought a set from Brownells, and will likely not use it again for a long time if ever

I ended up keeping the set I bought from tna. Figured it'd be good to have if I want to swap barrels later on. Takes five minutes to check and worth the peace of mind. Bring your bolt and barrel by.
