Not sure if this has been addressed yet but I worked out some numbers. (Because we should be fighting this based on facts alone).
Currently there around 76,000 AR-15's registered in Canada. Assume a fair market value per AR-15 of $1,500/firearm. Magazines, as well as additional upper receivers, and other accessories will need to be compensated. I would easily peg that number to be $2,000/firearm as "low fair":
76,000 x $2000 = $152M for AR-15's alone (excluding other "assault weapons").
With government programs, typically only 60% of the invested amount goes into the program with 40% spent in ancillaries (such as managing the program, government administration, etc). Since we expect legal challenges on this one, as well as challenges in terms of compliance, I would even say that up to 80% would go to program management costs with 20% going back to issuing payouts.
$152M x (100/20) = $0.76B
That's right, $0.76B
just the AR-15's, not including other firearms classified as "assault weapons". I would double that amount to cover everything the Liberals are promising on banning. So if they went also for the SKS, CZ, etc. we can easily be looking at over $1.5B for this program. That's more than
the entire Toronto Police Service budget for 2019 (
https://toronto.citynews.ca/2019/01/24/police-services-board-approves-1b-budget-for-2019/)
And $2,000/firearm that includes all accessories is a low estimate. If this were to go up to $3,000 per firearm, the costs will be well over $2.0B.
The CPC or the National Post or Globe and Mail should be pointing out all of these numbers to the public. Trudeau has no plan and has no idea how much everything costs, and he's going to push forward a plan that has no merit without facts to back him up, just to cover up his embarrassment with the brown face and black face scandal.
