7mm-08 VS 308

Would the 18 inch barrel of the Ruger American Compact have a significant negative impact on either cartridge performance?

You will lose some muzzle velocity for sure but it won't have a significant impact on performance IMHO. I believe you mentioned you are shooting out to 200 yards(?) max so no worries. Get it sighted in and your good to go!

Im pretty sure that's one of the loads Randy Newberg uses on Elk out to 300m+.

ive used accubonds in 270 140 and 308 150, now use the 7mm-08 with 140gr woodleighs on our big deer the Sambars, id not hesitate for a second to launch a 7mm 140 AB into a Elk or Moose or Sambar

to the OP, the 7-08 is a ripper, load light bullets for the Sheilas to begin with an then stick a good 140gr in an away ya go!
enjoy
cheers

My wife's 7mm-08 pet load is 47.2 gr of IMR4350 F210 primers w/ Sierra 140gr Pro Hunters in Nosler cases to coal 2.276" 1/2 MOA (sorry, do not velocity written down)
For factory ammo, she can produce sub-MOA groups with Nosler 140 gr AccuBond @ 100 yards in her Steyr Mountain Classic with a 20" barrel.

She is recoil sensitive and this is her comfort limit. Have not even tried to get her to shoot any larger cartridges. Her goal is a black bear, deer and elk.
She spends more time shooting her Ruger No.1 in 250 Savage or my custom LH Rem 700 CDL in 250AI, as she prefers the lesser recoil.

I've been a 7-08 fanboy since the early 80's...they just seem to be way more effective on game than you would think they should be! :)

But, its hard to argue against the bullet selection of the 308 win....no reason not to own both.

OP. I have and use .308, 7-08, 7-08AI, and .243. I started out my wife with the .243. She's used it for a few years, took a couple deer with it using 100gr bullets. It killed them fine but we were both concerned about how quartering shots would perform. I then bought my wife a 7-08 in a savage lady hunter. It has a 20 inch barrel (2" shorter than her previous .243) and is lighter at 7lbs, scoped. I loaded up some 140s for her but with the lighter rifle the recoil was stiffer than she liked (she's 5'3" and about 105lbs) compared to her previous .243. So I've moved to a faster load with 120's for her based on recoil.

If recoil is of concern, I'd go with reduced 140s in the 7-08 or 120 loads. Both will be a fair bit lighter than a reduced load of 150 in a .308 and I don't think either will give up any performance compared to the 308. Both 7-08 and 308 will take the animals you've listed.

Hi, Clay
A few years ago, I picked up a 7-08 for my wife, for the same reasons you are considering.
She has had no problems shooting it, recoil-wise. And this is in a Browning BLR, which is known to accentuate recoil a bit with its drop at the comb. Has taken several deer. and also a couple of moose have been downed with it. All have dropped expeditiously!

For deer hunting, she shoots a 140gr bullet. I reload, and I topped it with a 160gr Partition for moose. I don't know if there is a commercial load for 7-08 with a 160gr bullet or not.

From an 18" barrel , they will both have a lot of muzzle blast imho.

No "humble opinion" about it, there WILL be a lot of muzzle blast either way. OP needs to reconsider and go with a 22" rifle. This will give him/her some more weight, better handling and less noise.

Lapua brass has nothing to do with a cartridge “coming alive”. And I’ve shot a truck load full of Lapua brass. Including in the 7mm-08.

Lapua brass seems to last longer when loaded near max pressure. Rl-17 adds to the velocity at this pressure. It's too slow for the 308 Win but fills a 7-08 case really well with a 140 gr bullet nearing 3000 fps. That's my experience.

Have had both -- prefer the 7mm-08 shoots flatter and hits harder downrange than 308. you can get heavier bullets in 308 but found I didn't need them for deer & moose in my neck of the woods. Shot my biggest moose ever (1165 lbs) with a 7mm-08 Federal Premium 140grn Nosler partition --- 1 shot.

^ Nice!. I've always been a die hard 7mm mag fan for bigger game, but I'm really liking the 7-08 now that I got the boy one. I finally got some reloads for my 7x61 S&H so I'll probably try it this year, but the 7-08 will be along with my boy as well.
