The theory is that the 308 shoulder diameter is such that it wedges into the taper of the body in the 30-06 chamber, and prevents the cartridge from going further into the chamber.
I have watched 30/06 Garand rifles fire full blocks of 308 ammo several times. Fed, fired, extracted, and ejected perfectly. The fired cases end up with no necks, as you can imagine. Fireforms with just a short section of the shoulder remaining.
I'll check and see if I have a picture of one.

Just for the fun of it, let's resurrect this old thread with some old components.
Sighting in a 300 Savage Model 99 Take-down with 150 gr Winchester Silvertips, ahead of 35 grains of Ammomart #44 powder, and CIL 8 1/2 primers, in Metallverken 300 Savage brass.

Hey guys, i am curious if 300 savage is the only cartridge i can fire out of my model 99, thanks for any advice, i searched but could not find answers.

well, at least you asked before trying it I guess. Too many don't ask. If your 99 is chambered in .300 savage, that's what you shoot in it period!
Hi guys. I was given a model 99 in 300 Savage by my brother this year. Shot my 1st deer with it this week; hoping my result was an anomaly.
15 yards, broadside, 150 grain... hit a rib just behind the front shoulder and made a mess inside but no through penetration. No real blood trail without the exit hole. Found the deer but was surprised that this round didn’t pass through since the 300 is supposed to be an upgrade to my trusty 30-30’s.
I have never had a 30-30 round that failed to achieve full penetration, but I shoot 170 gr in 30-30. Appreciate info from more experienced 300 Savage shooters.

What ammo ? Bullet ? Blair - Full speed still at 15 yards - light jacketed cup and core bullet can EASILY blow apart on a rib that close ! RJ
I was given 2 boxes of white box Winchester ammo with the rifle. My brother is pretty sure they are reloads from a few years ago; he’s going to check his book when he gets back home to confirm the load data and bullet type.
I shot most of that ammo sighting in the gun (mounted another scope on it so we wasted a few getting on paper). They shot a pretty good group (since I’m no marksman I can’t do any better than a couple of inches at 50 yards without a bench) so I felt ready to hunt. I guess I’m mostly interested in what an experienced user would call typical performance for this caliber, as well as what rounds / bullets you guys have landed on as effective for deer. Most of the time I’d expect to be shooting them at 50-100 yards but this guy really had a death wish. Maybe just bad luck for my 1st use?

They were 150 grain Hornady interlocks @ 2600 fps. The bullet did penetrate the off side ribs but not the hide and it did deflect quite a bit after hitting the first rib so travelled further than if it had tracked straight through. Perhaps we should switch to 150 grain partitions or we could just mount a bayonet if you are going to shoot deer so close in the future!
The new Interlocks are crap.I've had bullet blowup in a 9.3x62 at 100 yards on moose 286gr SP.With a .270 as well in bear and deer. The old interlocks in the dull red box were great.I have talked to Hornady but all I got was denials.After I know friends called with the same complaint they said,"that's the first we"ve heard of it". I just shot a mulie and a cow moose opening day with the old 130gr with no core separation and 83gr +87gr respectively.On another forum a guy sectioned a couple .270/130gr old vs new and the interlock crimp has been moved along with what appears to be different jacket material.They cut corners somewhere but won't fess up.They were 150 grain Hornady interlocks @ 2600 fps.
