Four AK-style rifles in Canada:
1. SKS-D/KD-accepts AK mags, distantly looking like AK, extreme reliability. Relatively cheap. 1000CaD with all mods, plus time
2. VZ58-closely resembles AKM, but proprietary mags only. Just OK reliability/ durability. A bit expensive. 1500CaD with these mods, plus moderate time
3. T81-somewhat AKM looking, but AK mags need modification to be used. Good reliability/ durability. A bit expensive for its overall quality. 1000CaD. No mods.
4. M10x-modern AKish look, some new features, accepts AK mags, but no reliable BHO option. Feels like a beautiful greenhouse flower gentle rifle. Really expensive for what you get for that price. 1700-2000CaD. No reliable BHO, magpul stock missing one of the QD mounts (it is extra), the pistol grip is missing the cleaning kit (it is extra) and come on-no sights included (I'd expect sights to be included for that crazy price and core features missing by design).

The Type 81 certainly scratched the itch for me! Only a Valmet could do better..... at more then 4 times the price.

Valmet is way off the price tag for most customers. Even those four shown are barely affordable by most users. Valmet is also not in classic .cal and I do not have one. But the key question is why the f... M series in its AR versions are allowed and civilian AKs are not I know it is political, economical and mainly emotional stupidity that banned AKs in Canada

Vz58 reliability/durability is just OK? It has outperformed every AK on this guys channel.

Thanks for the video though! I would add the PSA KS47, I know it's an AR but still...ak mags.

Believe me, i have the same frustration when i shoot my buddys M1a, im like wtf can we own this, but NOT a SVD?! Haha no common sense, just politics.

Sks more reliable than my vz58? Not really.
Which one is the most reliable?
First of all, sks are old surplus. You cant compare a surplus to a new issued that passes quality control step Like csa vz. Also, each gun is unique. I owned refurbish sks, unissued sks.

From what ive seen, Refurbish sks are pretty much unreliable. In my case most likely because of the firing pin jam issue and wear it had over the time. I also owned a unissued all matching sks. Not the same at all. All parts were match and new. This guy was something you could call a solid and dependable gun. Mechanism was working way better, striking was more consistant than refurbish one. No issue with it.

On the other hand i owned a csa vz58 brand new. That gun was my favorite over all because of its design; lightweight, short stroke gas system, more accurate, Solid and dependable gun. Maybe not as much durable as a unissued sks, but more reliable than sks. In fact, much enough for any canadian civil use. My vz had thousands of round and no malfunction. Thats why i moved from sks plateform to vz and would never go back. Vz is light, strong milled receiver, main moving parts made of hard stainless made to last. But also fieldstrip is much easier and faster on a vz. I remember all the time required to clean my sks.

SKS's sometimes FTF with lead soft points ( not wat the gun was designed for ik, but it happens nonetheless)... ive yet to witness a VZ or type 81 have the same issue.

As for durability, theres no shortage of **CSA** VZ 58 owners complaining about internal parts breaking. Alot of the parts on VZ 58s are cast and made very lightweight, so if were referring to the CSA models, id rate its durability not bad, but certainly below the SKS and type 81.

same. I do not have actual 858, which may outperform anything in the video, but my VZ58 sometimes doesn't like some rounds, which could be mag issue, I still have to work more with it.

to other guys re: 305a, ks etc these are all not AK in all principles, while even vz 58 was designed based on AK ideas and making those better even it became quite a different beast
same for m10x.
ks, 305a, 181c etc they are all not ak, just using akm mag and .cal, they re engineered in principle without even looking at AK.

and I have to agree that SKS KD specifically is quite unreliable, not sure why Kodiak decided to that way instead of creating true AK mag catch/ release.

If those four are almost out of the price range of most people then maybe firearms aren’t for them, these aren’t expensive guns for the most part in today’s market. They are cheap to buy and cheap to feed on the average.

well, many people can afford under 600$ , but when it jumps above 1000, that's when it becomes difficult

Too bad about the M10x, one of my friends bought one and likes it; but he just plinks from the standing and rocks mag changes at the range. When I read about some of the accuracy reports, that killed my interest. It's a good looking rifle though, that SKS-D looks like an abomination with those mods

I've not shot a M10X but of all the 7.62x39 guns, the T81 feels and shoots the most to me like an actual AK47. Looks close enough, feels close enough and commie enough to scratch the AK47 itch.

If you want to hang all sorts of modern accessories on it, there are better rifles to do it on than the T81 though.

Welcome to buying and shooting guns, it’s not cheap and seems to get more expensive with each year. Long gone are the days of cheap surplus guns in a wooden barrel unfortunately.

In fact everything seems to be going down this road my wife was shopping for a new toaster yesterday and said the average price was $80 lol, $80 for a middle of the road toaster wtf!?!
