How are the newer XCR's

This thread got me interested in NR fun guns. I had a look at a review or two and one criticism was accuracy of the platform. Since I'd be using this for target shooting that would be a big deal for me. Any comments on the accuracy issue?

From the hunting gear guy:

Robinson XCR-L Accuracy

Part of the trade off from going with a long stroke gas system and quick change barrel system is that there are more variables than in an AR. Those variables add up to a less accurate system than the AR15. Even with the heavier barrel on this rifle, I would consistently get 3 MOA out of this XCR with ammo it liked. With some ammo that the rifle didn’t like (Tula 223), the patterns were incredibly bad: 8MOA.

At 3 MOA, I would describe the XCR as combat accurate. That’s similar to mil-spec requirements for the M16 (4.5″ at 100 yards for a 10 shot group), but quite far away from the 1 MOA you can expect with a good quality aftermarket AR barrel. Some users have reported better accuracy out of their XCR’s, some worse.

Make sure you get the pencil barrel and Keymod (MLOk?) version. Especially if you want to take it backpacking. With the NR barrel, the rifle feels very long. Make sure you 2 point sling it! It does not hang well as a single point.

I’m not a fan of the FAST stock either. Feels too small and the LOP feels off for me.

As a run and gun rifle, it’s ok. I’ve seen them fail during matches and courses. The small ejection port can make clearing malfunctions an issue.
I do like the stock trigger though! Much better than a stock DD one.

I read that. No way am I shelling out 2k for a gun that's not that accurate.

Yah comparatively poor accuracy was the ONLY thing that held me back from buying an XCR. Supposedly the keymod models offer better accuracy then the older ones.

For the price of a new model, id still consider other accurate options like the SLR, MS, SL8, WK180 / 180NSR and for bullpups the K&M M17s.

- why preference for pencil barrel over heavy barrel?
- do newer key-mod rifles come with heavy or pencil?

You can choose whichever barrel you prefer. IMO, HB has no accuracy benefits vs LB unless you do volume firing.

I have XCR-M with a heavy barrel and it is very front heavy. it is still a 3MOA rifle. People on internetz are saying that with handloading you can get better results.

I also bought a 6.5crm barrel for it and i chose a light one, just on the off chance i take it hunting.

My XCR-L has a light barrel, better for offhand shooting and theoretically for bush as you are hauling less weight. Still a 3MOA rifle.

P.S. And XCR-M gas system is kind of like M14 gas system, gas piston hitting the op rod. XCR-L is closer to AK though. Just an oprod with piston head going straight into expansion chamber.

They've been selling MLOK versions in the US now for I don't know how long. I would consider waiting (maybe not considering the political situation) until Wolverine starts bringing in MLok versions. I suspect they are delaying bringing them in so they can get rid of their keymod stuff.

I had the XCR-L competition model in 5.56 with the lightweight keymod handguard. I thought the rifle was very well put together, but I couldn't get comfortable with the FAST stock. I ended up switching to an ACR stock with an adapter, and while this combo felt awesome, the rifle became far too heavy for my liking, even with the pencil barrel. It's unfortunate that the MLOK version is actually heavier than the keymod XCR. Aside from the weight, I did enjoy the rifle. If i did it again, I'd probably get the standard-length handguard version
