Up here Coyotes at present but not common, large Gray or Timber wolves are the norm and they are plentiful. When the big wolves are around the deer are noticeably on edge but they certainly don't leave the area as there is no where to go except into another wolves territory. I get deer on the game cameras, couple hours later a few wolves, several hours after that more deer. So deer learn and adapt from my observance to live within there environment which includes wolves, man, bears, and coyotes. They will change their daily behaviour patterns though to side step the threat. So I have noticed deer that would be coming to feed late in the afternoon would now come during the night, or early morning.

A further thought to control the coyote population is to import "Road Runners", from the south west, and perhaps several of those big shaggy dogs. Once we have an established Road Runner population and some of those big shaggy dogs on rural properties the coyote population will fall in line as I have never ever seen a coyote win just one battle with a Road Runner, or one of them shaggy dogs. 
Here in jan/feb coyotes drive the deer onto the ice of lakes etc and kill just for sport it seems at times not even eating them
Be nothing to count 6 or 8 dead deer over a weekend
There is no place for them IMO if you want a good deer herd
Yes they will adapt but you will never see the numbers you had prior to the coyote showing up which for us was in the late 80's

I have seen that too when the snow get deep and or crusty. They seem to go nuts and eat only choice parts. Wolves are much worse.

Even whitetail deer around here (Winnipeg area) are non-native. Apparently there is record of when the first appeared around here. They followed farming north, and also the decease in numbers of mule deer.
In the paper here today. LOL they finally are saying they might take moose here HELLO'

Don't think they keep them away. Coyotes certainly have an impact on population though. Recall reading a study (sorry don't have the link) which showed only 25% of fawns make it to 9 weeks old. 80% of that mortality was coyote and 20% was bobcats.
It will make a difference don't let anyone tell you it does not....
Example.....if there are 3 coyotes around, they may eat a few fawns in the spring..... If the 3 coyotes are killed, they won't be around to eat the fawns...just makes sense.....
Now some may say new coyotes will move in......well that might be, but wherever they came from, will have fewer coyotes too......So the total amount of coyotes will be less and less coyotes means less likely a fawn will be killed...
Killing coyotes does help, the ones that say it doesn't, I just don't believe them..
