Remington Custom Shop

I had a kimber of Oregon mannlicher in 222 - it was nicely scaled to the cartridge size - with lots of nice features like steel grip cap, neider buttplate, inlayed swivels, nice walnut etc. I traded it off on here probably 10 years ago, one I probably should have kept.

That sounds very nice... a "walking around" rifle... I love the .222 cartridge and have had several, but I am currently without one... I kept the dies and several hundred brass, because it is inevitable.

Rob. If me I would watch guns international. They have a section for remington custom shop firearms and there is actually a couple Model 7's listed and for under 2K US
If you keep a eye here you may find something to fill your requirements
Just an idea
Cheers

So based on the current Guns International prices it looks like a price for a good condition used Remington Custom Shop Model 7 Mannlicher is around $2600 (Can) plus import fees, duties, Federal and Provincial taxes, shipping, etc. I have never imported a USA firearm but my son does this frequently (through Prophet River I think) and based on his experience I would expect the final cost to be closer to $3500, maybe more. Anyone have experience with the cost of importing rifles from the USA?

Have you checked out the new import process?

I believe that I am done importing until they get the kinks worked out of the State Department's new regulations... in the meantime they are holding two of my rifles hostage at the border.

I import regularly, and the process has entirely changed in the past few months due to new US export regulations. It used to be that you would find a rifle, negotiate a deal with the vendor, send a package to the seller with payment, FFL form and your importers paperwork, then the seller would ship to the partner FFL, the partner FFL would broker the export and send it up to your importer and your importer would send it to you... the costs were; base USD price, plus CDN conversion, plus shipping to FFL, plus $250 fee to importer, plus CDN tax, plus shipping from importer to you. On an item under a thousand you will be close to double the price. Now, the item MUST be purchased by the US FFL dealer, which means you have to broker a dealer, pay your importer, who forwards the money to the FFL (plus takes a 10% fee), the FFL pays for the item with the vendor and then the original process kicks in but with changes to the paperwork requirements and with accompanying fees and wait times... I am done for the time being, "unless" I see something I can't live without.

No experience in the last two years but lots prior. It was not as expensive as I thought then but I have no idea what the new changes brought
I would give Clay a call at Prophet River and get the current information
My limited experience with buying used custom shop guns is they are usually very well taken care of and many would pass for new
Cheers

No not in the last two years for me
Daughter back in university for the third time has taken the wind out of my buying
Cheers

Best bet is to be patient and buy one up here. They are around and the ones I’ve seen have been under $2000 cdn (some closer to 1k). In the old days, I remember walking into wholesale sports in Edmonton and seeing more than one new on the rack. 350rm was the cartridge they most frequently had in stock.

I had one in .350 Rem Mag, nice rifle, but swapped it for a stainless Ruger M77 Mark II. Douglas still has two of the .350 RM's and a couple others that I forget the chamberings on....

The import process sounds way too complex for me....especially now. Ordering a new one through the Gravel Agency sounds very expensive but having a look-alike crafted by a Canadian gun maker sounds nearly as expensive.

Thank you all for your thoughtful and informed comments. I very much appreciate it.

However, I am not sure the cheap used examples actually exist, at least not anymore. However, if you ever do see a genuine Remington Custom Shop Model 7 "Mannlicher" in whatever caliber in at least VG used condition offered for sale for "under $2000 cdn (some closer to 1k)", please let me know immediately.

No problem. The two in cabelas were there 2/3 years ago - not decades. They were $1800 if I recall correctly, and they were mint. So yes they are still around, and far less expensive than $5000. I also don’t think the stock is the only difference. I think I read that all custom shop Remingtons have their actions trued, and use only hand picked barrels. For what it’s worth.

You could also contact Douglas, and pester him to sell you one of his. I’m sure someone on here has his contact info.

Last summer the Cabelas Barrie location had a Model 7 Laminate Manlicher for $1700... so as Double Gun says, they are kicking around. I may very well come across one in my ferreting about.

Please let me know if any of you come across an affordable one that you don't want for yourself.
