BC Hunter who shot support dog fined and banned

He got off easy. I would guess the cost of replacing a therapy dog is a lot more than 4K.

It may have not been an accredited therapy dog, perhaps it just identified as a therapy dog. The hunter is responsible to identify his target before he shoots, however this dog certainly looks like a wolf, was apparently running free, and if there was no other person in the vicinity and nothing showing on the dog hinting 'dog', then how was he to know? As usual, we only get an edited version of this story.

He shot it in a zone that doesn't have a wolf season.

It was also wearing a collar. The owners were close by (like 20 ft away if I remember right), but the dog had gone up and embankment onto a gravel road so the owners were out of sight down a hill.

Anyone who thinks that fat dog looks like a wolf hasn't seen many real wolves.

Regardless of the dogs status, this guy tried to poach a wolf, and only got caught because he shot someone's dog.

If it was aggressively coming at him in a threatening manner I don't think the no wolf season is a valid point....just my 2 cents though.

It was a therapy dog for autistic kids. Probably about as docile as a brick of butter. Your experience of dogs must be solely of the kind you can pick up with one hand to think that this was a reasonable shoot.

"Aggressively coming at him in a threatening manner." LMAO.

Why don't you think the fact that he was out of season is a valid point? He was committing an illegal act, in an area where it's never legal. Just because a dog is coming towards you 'aggressively' doesn't give you free reign to shoot it. Imagine if posties carried guns!

I guess it didn't play out that way... Plenty of stupid hunters to go around. I also figure this guy got off real lucky.

the guy should be in prison, with a lifetime ban on firearms ownership and hunting

that being said is every dog now a therapy dog of some kind? I mean all dogs are but do they need a label?

Seems to be OK if the CO does it https://nationalpost.com/news/canad...-his-dog-to-death-during-b-c-ice-fishing-trip

The problem with lifetime bans is they give no incentive to straighten up. Give someone a lifetime hunting ban, and you've just made them a poacher for life.

Thats nice. Its also wholly irrelevant. What a CO does when a dog approaches him agressively while hes investigating a fishing violation is very different from a hunter shooting a non-agressive animal that he thought was a wolf in an area WHERE THERE IS NO WOLF HUNTING.

Why do you feel so inclined to defend this guy who gives all hunters a bad name?

There are Service Dogs (for individuals with disabilities or mental health issues) and Therapy Dogs for helping groups or individuals. These dogs are trained, tested and certified and have government issued ID.
Therapy dogs are tested and accepted by health care agencies. No, not just any dog. These dogs are also highly trained, obedience and service and pretty expensive.

There are also now a lot of people running around claiming their pets are emotional support animals but that is legally not existent and mostly BS and trying to game the system.
Mots any jurisdiction in North America has Service Dog regulations of some kind. A tested and certified Service Dog carries ID and Certification card and stores, restaurants, taxis, airlines cannot reject a service dog.

Can't say from the article what this dog was, but if it was a Therapy Dog it was guaranteed not aggressive and if this guy made that claim he probably made an ass out of himself in court.

I have a friend with PTSD who has a certified Service Dog with picture ID (owner and dog) and that dog can go into bars, restaurants, taxis and gets its own seat on Westjet.
It is also a very cool dog and one of the best trained ones I've ever seen. Puts any police dog to shame.

I'm just going to drop this subject...I wasn't there so I don't know what really went down....hunter shouldn't have shot it but I can see it happening if the dog/wolf was aggressive.

Whats wrong with the owner taking some responsibility and keep his working dog under his/her/their control.

And just to be clear this gives the person involved a bad name....how does this give Hunters in general a bad name or are you just trying to be more dramatic.

Just my humble opinion though...:)

Who said the dog wasn't under control? The dog was not far from the owner - the owner claimed to be only 10 ft away in the original news articles from when the dog got shot.

I remember when this went down
I also think the charges are appropriate considering the situation and the location.
It's a very popular area for hikers and dog walkers and the use of firearms and hunting in that specific area has been long debated by area residents.

funny thing , when me and my hunting partner got charged by a pack of wolves, when I saw the first one poke it's head over the ridge my first thought was "WTF is someone's dog doing out here?". Shoulda been buddy's first thought too, considering the location he was hunting.
